If you think the non-celestial space of our galaxy is empty . . . .

Basically alot of cold invisible stuff in space, we tend to see stuff that scatters, absorbs (less-so) or emits light, but this stuff is cold, very cold, and at most wavelenths it will not be visible. In our journey to find faster spacecraft that thinks that are very small like aggregates less than 400 nm in size are small but can create tremedous energies. At 0.33c (1E8) such 200 nm particles 400 joules of energy.

i dont think galactic colonization will come as a product of alcubierre drives, or orion drive generation/sleeper ships, on long voyages to distant starts. it will start off as a single colony close to home, that civilization will deplete its resources and send the next colony out.and humans will hop from rock to rock over the course of many generations. they will go anywhere where there is usable material and fuel for their reactors. out from the kuiper belt and into the space junk between stars. individual voyages would be less than a human life span and wont go far, and the generations that follows will go a little further. we could have a sizable portion of the galaxy colonized in as little as a million years.

The "space junk" between stars you talk about really are rouge planets.:P

I just wanted to give them more credit.

The problem with what you propose is that such "hopping" results in less and less people at the leading edge of the expansion, and unless there is constant investment to make it larger, it will stagnate back.

I*rogue planets.

"Rouge" is the French word for "red," adopted into English to describe a certain shade of pink. Planets that can be described as rouge include Mars and Pluto... neither of which is rogue. ;)

I CAN NEVERSPELL THAT WORD RIGHT!;.;

Try spelling it left, tell the g to go left and and trick the u into going right.

Don't forget all the derelict generation ships.

And bits and fragments of black hole drive ships.

This constant spreading out by less than a generation will eventually lead to people not breeding with each other, disparate group reproducing without gene flow is how speciation occurs (humans are doomed to go extinct eventually, that might be by literally breeding our species to extintion)

The true rouge squadron are the girls of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing - the Strike Witches.  (The link is Wikipedia and SFW, have caution googling - some images are not.)

ok, guys stop.

...Assuming population doesn't increase to match the increased space and resources available.
