CPU: AMD A8-7650K 3.3 GHz Quad-Core processor for $90
Motherboard: Asus A68HM-E micro ATX FM2 + motherboard for $50
Memory (RAM): G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory for $45
Storage: Western Digital AV-GP 320GB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (320GB - 10TB) for $20
Case: Azza Cosmas ATX mid tower case for $35
Power suply: Corsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply for $50

Not planning to overclock btw, but will this pc build be able to handle big stations (like 500 parts big-ish)/ tons of pretty mods.

my current laptop with 2.1 Ghz (I believe) CPU and 2 GB RAM runs KSP fine on low settings (20 FPS ish if a lot is going on) so an upgrade would be nice.

I'm not seeing a graphics card in there, thats gonna cause a chokepoint.

Also I'm not familiar with that particular processor, but $90 says "value" to me, rather than ">500 part space stations".

Same goes for the $50 mobo.

8GB RAM will prbably be ok, since most of us have been forced to chug along with 2-3GB this far. But it'll probs only cost you a few more bucks to double that, which will just save you doing it later, inevitably.

I'm assuming that since you want those pretty mods, you will have the detail settings turned up of course.

Nope, afaik nothing can handle 500 parts with high fps at the moment. It should still be a big upgrade from an old laptop, but if you want serios performance in KSP you have no other choice than a recent Intel i5-XXXXk, thats overclocked. That would be a significant upgrade to the AMD-CPU...

So what would be the max part count be (on the parts I listed in my original post) on high/max settings before it goes down to 30 FPS?

(I'm also planning to play some old games like Age of Empire and stuff like that which should all be fine and pretty sure I wont play too many AAA titles)

Thats impossible to say, there are no recent benchmarks for KSP. Also the number of parts is not the only important metric. Dont forget that 1.1 will be released soon(tm), which will change everything again.
