Meh, while I agree they don't have a shining safety record, as long as you avoid stuff like elevators in old buildings or theme park rides it shouldn't be any more dangerous than any "developed" country. I'm sure there are areas in most countries (Western or not) where you shouldn't go if you value your life or rights.

Anyway, why did they actually block the elevator in the first place? Surely if they were going to do maintenance on it they would have noticed something while working?
