So, I spent a solid 3 hours building, testing and sending 2 parts of a space station into orbit, and once I managed to get them to rendezvous, the ports didn't latch. At first I thought that I'd placed the docking ports in a strange place, but the docking ports are placed on the outside of the fuselage, not clipped inside. After realizing this I kept trying to attach them again, and the result was these screenshots:

Please note that some of these are from different angles on the ship too.

This is version 1.1, Windows 10 on Steam.

I don't know how to get to the logs, but I don't think it'd help so I did not include those. If a save file is needed I'll add it.

My only thought is that it might be the structural fuselage not allowing the ports to.. well... dock.

SO, it'd be great if someone could help explain to me what kind of ghosts are causing this kind of torture to my sanity.

Well, two of those docking ports are backwards.

I specifically made 2 docking ports backwards, and then 3 forwards, in the situation that I somehow picked the wrong one, I tried with every side, and on the back of the ship I was docking with, there was a backwards port which I also tried, but did not take screenshots with

Make sure you're coming in with a bit of speed to be sure they latch.

Gonna try that, lemme get back to you on it

Can confirm, did not work... Just ended up ramming the craft :/

Can you please post your persistence file?  It's in Saves/YourSaveName/persistent.cfg

you should check the menu of all of the docking ports that are supposed to be 'free' - if you see the option 'decouple' or 'undock' on some of them, that means the node of this docking collar is already connected to something. if it is, you won't be able to dock anything to this docking port. if you try to press the decouple button, whatever the docking node was attached to would separate, potentially violently if it's clipped.

seeing your .craft file would also help, to check the build.

This was definitely happening on every single docking port, thought I am not sure why... I'm going to put both crafts here:

Satellite I was attempting to dock to: https://www.dropbox.com/s/50xj7uan05j25ad/Planet%20Satellite.craft?dl=0

New part to the space station: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0iz14z6s3pkaqu9/Kerbal%20Space%20Station%20Part%20%231.craft?dl=0

Really?? Is this new in 1.1?? Up until now I always came in very slow, aiming for a dead stop right in front of the port, and then the magnetic force would catch and finish off the last few inches. Worked fine in all previous versions as far as I am aware.

I hope I am missing something here. Having to dock with some force seems ridiculous.

ok, checked out your .craft, all inverted docking ports are connected by their docking collar node - all of the 3 nodes circled in red won't be able to allow any docking. only the docking port (and the one behind) in the middle is correctly oriented and would allow docking. (free docking collars can only 'attach' to similar 'free' docking collar - and they have to face each other)

when trying to dock two .crafts, the end result for docking ports has to be this (both .crafts 'docking collar' nodes have to be free, if that's the case and they are in the magnetise range, they will attract each other) :

so, place your docking ports the right way :) docking ports are not one way :)

if you want to absolutely keep the aesthetic look of the 'inverted' docking ports, but still have functionnal docking collars, you're going to need another method :

nah, once you are in the magnetism range, both .craft will still attract themselves for docking in 1.1 like before :) - regardless of approach speed - and when you undock, you still have to move out of the magnetism range before the magnetism reactivates :)

I don't mean ram into it, but sometimes the docking ports are finicky and need about 0.1 M/s.

I'm going to take a look at them.  Sometimes the game screws up and thinks that the state of the docking port is docked.

EDIT:

Nevermind, someone beat me to it. :)
