I can't wait to send a manned rocket to Ike called 'Eisenhower' (Eisenhower's nickname used to be Ike).

Do you have any subtle (or not so subtle) names for certain missions?

For some reason I'm not even sure of I've had the habit of naming my rockets as "gooses" and my planes as "ducks" since I first started playing KSP.

Typically with some kind of adjective like "LongGoose" "RocketGoose" "UglyDuck" "WildGoose" or other times as different types like "Mallard1" or "Stork2"

I guess it was the just first thing that popped into my head and it stuck...

Typically I name my manned spacecraft after gods from Norse mythology such as "Odin" "Thor" "Tyr"  but also I've named them Viking and or Norseman which are not names from Norse mythology.

Typically with Launch Vehicles I use random names such as "Hylias", "Xanadu", 'Chevalier" etc, but I give them a roman numeral which corresponds to the number of engines the first stage has, for instance a Xanadu V has five engines, also I assign my launch vehicles a four digit identifying code (similar to the real life later generation of the Delta series of Launch Vehicles.) the first digit indicates how many stages, the second digit corresponds to how many SRBs are mounted radially to the main tank, the final two digits refer to the minimum diameter of the payload fairing, or main fuel tank for instance 3914 means a three stage launch vehicle with nine radially mounted SRBs, with a fuel tank or payload fairing diameter of 1.4 metres.

With Probes and Satellites I just give them acronyms like HOST (High Orbit Space Telescope) or MASS (Münar Altimetric Systems Spacecraft).

My mun-capable SSTO (M) was named flounder, because of its relatively flat and wide looks. The bigger version was named Halibut... not much of a pun, but it's one of the few cases where I 've had some continuity in the naming, other than the usual PurposeOfCraft 7

I had one of roverdude's starlifters arranged as a puller truss with two outrigger engines and large fuel tanks at the front, so I could add more modules to the back without removing the drive first. it was called "the pendulum phallusy".

My own favourite is ASTOne™It's a vessel to catch asteroids. That's why there is "AST". One, because it's the first one I've built (although, second iteration is called ASTOne™ 2 because it doesn't destroy the pun) another thing, it sounds like "a stone" which fits quite good for thing used to catch big rocks.

Where are the puns?

Being a Banks fan, I always liked the entries on this list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spacecraft_in_the_Culture_series) although there's just a few that I would consider Kerbally.

The Funny, It Worked Last Time..., I Thought He Was With You, Only Slightly Bent and Ultimate Ship The Second are a few names that seem to describe a situation I've had in KSP at some point though..

I use the abbreviation "ASDF xxx - yy" where xxx is a number and yy is a short description of the craft's purpose. In career they are then arranged in the order of business ventures for the sake of nostalgia.

ASDF stands for Akinya Space Disposable Flying as per a fictional spaceflight and interplanetary mining company found in a sci-fi book by A. Reynolds.

I name them according to what they do, so I can find them easily. So, Jeb and Bill are stuck on Duna in the good ship Duna Lander 1, while Nuclear Cruise Stage 2 awaits them in orbit with no fuel, because Ike Miner 1 was badly designed. (Sorry guys)

The Brown Smear series - after the real Blue Streak missile.

The BACCplane - powered by a single BACC SRB.

The Takoma Narrows Bridge - letting KSC head honchos walk from Mission Control to the SPH without needing to mix with the riff-raff on the ground, provided they don't mind it being a bit wobbly.

The Sounding Brass series of sounding rockets.

The RC Yes - RCS lander.

The RC Nope - Regular engined lander, after the RC Yes failed.

The Do or Duna probe.

An Unidentified How Is It Flying Object.

The Burj Kherbalifa, my 1/4 scale replica of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

My space shuttle names: Gallifrey, Britannia, Victory, (undecided), Camelot, and (undecided). Each name is a nod to the names of the NASA Shuttles, with a bit of a British spin. (Though in fact most of the originals are named after British ships anyway).

I  name them with their job along with british style;

Fighter mk1, Fighter mk2 etc (also enhanced fighter, superior fighter if they are same craft with upgrades)

Ssto mk1, ssto mk2 etc.

Tankers, Seaplanes, test beds etc.

I've gone through several phases. At one point I named them after NASA missions (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Viking, etc.) With spaceplanes, I either named them after members of Mongoose-type animals (Ferret, Weasel, etc.), or Swedish fighter planes (Gripen, Viggen). Sometimes I go crazy and name them all with K's. And my really small planes I name WeeBees. But the identifier has to rhyme with "Bee". So if I made a WeeBee Two, it would have to be called either a WeeBee Three or WeeBee Cee. or Dee. You get the picture.

My launch vehicles are a "Mark (number) (Type) Launcher" so Mark VI Medium Launcher, Mark II Light Launcher, Mark I Super-Heavy Launcher, etc. A "+" indicates a variant with boosters. Some of my older rockets used very bland names : L-1B Rover-Carrying Lander, OS-1 Orbital Scanner, etc. Now, I use gods and numbers. IE the "Thor-1 Orbital Missile Platform", "Orion Station", "Hermes IIIB"

For planes, it varies - Fighters : F-number 'Name (Usually a blade, but has been other things, for replicas, a strike aircraft, etc) (Loadout)

Transports  - C-Number 'Name'

Cargo CF - Number (Progresses from 'C' numbers) 'Name'

Spy Plane - R-Number 'Name'

Space Plane - SP-Number 'Name'

Trainer - T-Number 'Name'

Ground Attack - A-Number 'Name' (Loadout)

General Aviation - L-Number 'Name'

Some exceptions are made - Aeris 3F (fighter Aeris 3A), Mallard 2 (Mallard w/ 4 underwing engines), etc etc

Oh I have a laundry list of favorite punny names for vessels.  First planetary missions tend to get those:

Mohotivated
Eve Ent Horizon
Dunaverse
Dresperate
Joolific
Eeloosive

I've also had a few one-offs over the years, like the Alpaca Lips.

I have several naming conventions, though they're not usually puns.

I tend to name IPTs (Inter-Planetary Transports) after Star Wars characters for the classification, and after a song I like for the individual spacecraft. For example, I'll have several Organa-class IPTs (transport for 6 kerbals and some equipment to anywhere between Eve and Dres with varying propulsion modules for different tasks), and each will be named after a piece of music that I like.

Launchers are named after whatever comes to mind, but usually I'll make a series of similar launchers with the same name. For example, 1.25/1.875m Cinnabar launchers (named because they're Mercury-styled), 2.5m Tano launchers, 3.75m Jool launchers, 5m Sarnus/Sarvin launchers (depending on whether I have OPM or Kerbol Origins installed), 7.5m Gaia launchers.

Crew transports are usually named Mercury or Hermes after the Roman/Greek god of travellers (although there are the Hyperion-class transports for whenever I need 15 or more kerbals in orbit).

Usually missions to a particular world will all share the same name, such as the Athena missions to Duna, and usually those names are the names of various mythological beings; however, the spacecraft themselves will usually be named as follows: "IPT Red Star [Athena 1]" which denotes the current mission whilst keeping the name of the spacecraft. This mostly goes for IPTs, IPFs (Inter-Planetary Freighters) and ISTs (Inter-Stellar Transports), as they are usually the main reusable part of any mission. Bases are usually named after the planet, then the biome, then the type of base, and then the overall mission name, e.g. "Duna Midlands RF Outpost [Athena]" (RF stands for refuelling). Not the most interesting, but it helps me remember what's what.

For a while there, I was naming various probes after famous sidekicks.  GromitWatsonSilent Bob, Donkey, Ron Weasley, Samwise, Thing, Garth, Mini-Me, Trinity, Hit-Girl, Goose, Boo-Boo, Tinker Bell, Garfunkel, Igor, Al Gore, and many others all got to explore the far reaches of the Kerbal System.

I once had a whole series of planes named after Top Gun callsigns.

Then, I named a really badass fighter "Gibbs"

I use Banksian names.

As mentioned above, some are particularly Kerbally. The following are of my creation:

Lapse of Sanity

Bigger Stick

This Is Not A Name

Gesture Without Motion

Look On My Ship, Ye Mighty, And Despair

And some that aren't mine, but also not Banks':

Gravity's Angel

It's Character Forming

The Problem with Inertia

Winging It

excrements Happens

Figure Brooding on Madness

And of course all the ones from the books, and probably a few others fit the KSP mentality well.
