Yep.. you need a cfg file for planet mods... The mod does not support the hundreds of different planet mods out there without a cfg file for them. Up to the mod to do that.

What's involved in making a cfg for a planet pack?  Is it just a copy of the database.cfg, with new flavor text - or is there more to it?  Where would a mod author go to get started on this?  I'm happy to put some time towards it if it can be done without making a hash of your mod or theirs

Edit: particularly RSS, which probably has a big enough following to justify the time I spend :)

IE: The CelestialBody.name
name = TarsierSpaceTech    - replace the name with the mod name.
This is the file I use for my TST mod to add it's galaxies into ResearchBodies. So should work if you create entries for the RSS planets.

Great thanks! With some cutting and pasting from Wikipedia, I'm testing this now.  I've named it RSS_ResearchBodies.cfg and I'm leaving it sitting in GameData.  After looking at the Kopernicus files for RSS, it looks like the "name" field is set to the actual planet name - hoping this proves to be the case.  If I can get the main planets working I'll start in on the moons.  I'm well aware that this isn't part of your mod support and you quite likely have other things you would rather be doing, but I appreciate the advice. :)

Edit: At first pass this appears to have worked - I had to add an entry for Earth and set it to true true true true so that I had something other than the Sun visible in the Tracking Center though.  I'll try adding a few moons, and setting Earth's Moon as available at the start, and then start launching telescopes.  Exciting!

Finished the config file - available here if anyone else is looking for RSS or Stock Size RSS compatibility.  Just drop the file into your GameData directory.  It SEEMS to be working, feel free to message me if there's anything amiss.  I lost interest in writing flavor text (geez there are a lot of moons in our solar system) and started cutting and pasting the descriptions of the moons from the Kopernicus files.  Happy for any interested party to improve as needed :) Anyway, they show up correctly in the tracking station on the various difficulty settings, so I'll start a playthrough tomorrow to test the tech.

You should have a discovery message for every body (including moons)... and an IGNORELEVELS record for every body as well.
IGNORELEVELS is whether the body is visible on a new game start (Based on difficulty levels).

Actually I do recall having a file for RSS planets... Must have dropped off the radar.
I'll dig it up and fix it up and include in next version.

Yes, got all that I think. But I'm getting bleary from lack of sleep, so I'll follow up tomorrow and see how it goes :)

I beleive that OPM has a cfg file that supports this mod

The Outer Planet Mod contains its ResearchBodies config. Every planet being invisible now and the other new features are how it is supposed to be with this mod.

That said, every planet mod's ResearchBodies config is now out of date by some amount.

A followup on the RSS config - initially everything seemed OK, only the right planets showing up in the Tracking Station, etc.  I played through a bit of career and unlocked the various telescopes, and some judicious poking around revealed Venus and Mercury, which then showed up in the Tracking station minus their orbits.  As I understand this, I should now be able to research stuff either by paying in the Observatory or the pay-for-Contracts, correct?

I tried both and no further research is being completed, no matter how much time I spend warping.  The contracts either complete or fail (I don't know why) but Mercury and Venus remain stubbornly unknown objects.  I took some photos, which gave me a little science but did not reveal any orbits or any info.  Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else gotten this to work with RSS or another planet mod?

I'm happy to provide logs if that helps, but as nothing crashed or visibly broke I'm hoping this is pilot error :)

Did you complete research contracts on them?

When you do, you should see their research percentage go up in the Observatory when you select them.
Until you reach 50% you won't see their orbits.
and the old method of clicking to pay to get research has been removed.

You now have to complete research contracts at the Observatory or using the TB-75 telescope...
Or, if you have my TST mod you can take pictures of them to gain research points...

Having some kind of conflict or something. The mod is showing as enabled but settings appear to be missing and all bodies are showing up.

Log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/da9xpzm75ho6dft/output_log.txt?dl=0

Screenshot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/utkvy0fc4hggp4l/screenshot4.png?dl=0

I see no errors in the log related to ResearchBodies.. but plenty for other mods.
You started a new game and what difficulty settings did you select?
Can you go to the main menu and go to start a new game and access the difficulty settings for ResearchBodies and what do you see? Regarding planets available at startup?
From what I can tell you aren't using Kopernicus or any planet mods? and you completely deleted any previous ResearchBodies install in your steam folder before installing the latest?
(Just checking we haven't got some old rogue settings cfg files being picked up).
Short of that I'd try eliminating mods to see if you can find the source of any conflict.

The first time I use your mod and had a few questions.

1. I orbited kerbin with a telescope TB-75, and found them a few planets hovering on them with the telescope. Immediately after the discovery of new celestial bodies with a telescope I was given some points of science (~120-150 for each body), although the degree of study of these celestial bodies is equal to 0% at the Observatory. Science points give just for the open new celestial bodies (with 0% discovered)? And if I study a celestial body to 100%,  I'll give science points again?

2. I conducted several experiments to understand how the contracts ResearchBodies is work - spent all the money on contracts, and run the study founded celestial bodies in the Observatory. Decided to return to the original save point before the start of the experiments. I load the save game. And discovered that the heavenly bodies still visible in the Tracking Station (without orbits and detailed information, but visible). In the Observatory/Map they are unknown/hidden. Bug in Tracking Station? How to hide a celestial body in the Tracking Station, they should not be visible when you return to a earlier save?

3. Telescope TB-75 finds a new celestial body with 0% research. How to continue the study of celestial bodies? What devices to use, or other telescopes? I also install Tarsier Space Technology and SCANsat.

4. Does it matter where the telescope is in orbit of Kerbin or Jool? Do I need to move the telescope closer to the edge of the system to get some data?

Very interesting idea of this mod. But yet I find it difficult to understand how it works. Thank you for your work and helping. Sorry my bad English!

In description write " When the research state reaches 100%, you can finally go to this body and you earn science!". I got the science points, immediately after the discovery of a new body with a telescope TB-75, while his research is 0%. I think that something wrong/broke. Correct to get the reward after research, not before. But it is possible to a bit of science to give - for a new discovery.

1. Possibly a bug. Will have to look into it.

2. That sounds like a bug yeah. Will have to look into it.

3. possibly related to 1. but you have to complete contracts.

4. Only from the consideration of whether it can see them (distance). but if you are running stock the TB-75 can find all of them from kerbin.

The error is from Contract Configurator - saying that it can't find ResearchBodies contract (dll).

I'd check - You have ResearchBodies installed completely. and you have the most recent version of Contract Configurator installed as well.

Correct, I don't have any planet mods or Kopernicus and install ResearchBodies in 1.3 until the 1.3 version was released. Install after release is on an existing game. I will try with a new save and get back to you if settings come up correctly or have the same issue.

EDIT: New game settings menu comes up normally with all options as it should. Problem only seems to be in an existing save with ResearchBodies is installed after it is begun. (The existing save was new with 1.3 not a carryover). I thought I read this could be added to an existing game, was that incorrect?

Yep. Currently it will only work on saves started with ResearchBodies installed because research bodies has to write info into the save file.

I can put that on the backlog.

you can manually do this if you know what you are doing.
[Edit]
Here's how:
1) backup your existing save case you mess it up.
2) start a new game similar to your existing sve (IE career mode etc)
3) edit the new save persistent.sfs with a text editor. You need to copy some things from it into your existing save
4) First this block (Put it into the PARAMETERS section of your existing save) DON'T copy the blocks from this post, copy them from the new save you made

Impressive list of mods....
The error is from Contract Configurator - saying that it can't find ResearchBodies contract (dll).
So did you delete ResearchBodies? Can't tell from a screenshot of some folders.

I'd check - You have ResearchBodies installed completely. and you have the most recent version of Contract Configurator installed as well.

Did not delete research bodies. This was only my second time running the game after installing research bodies. First run did not produce any error.

I'll try reinstalling both Contract configurator and Research bodies and then report back

What about my problems? I have installed Kopernicus and Outer Planet Mod - i think this important information, and all mods work fine, game never don't crash. But with a bug of payments points of science immediately after the opening of a new celestial body.

Reinstalled both mods, did not encounter error message again. Seems to be fixed. Thanks.

Thanks for the bug fixes! As it is now better to researching the bodies? Just click the mouse and pay for the research? Or is there a more interesting approach? Payment for the researching bodyes was in the previous version too (in the Observatory).

*If you load a save file that was created before you installed ResearchBodies - ResearchBodies will now correctly update the save with the necessary ResearchBodies information and automatically turn ResearchBodies on. The default difficulty setting will be used as to which bodies you will be able to see.

Work with bug - in Tracking Station all bodies is visible. But without orbits and name (viewed like "Unknown body, class C..."). Reload save/game few times.
