Ehm, sorry about that, i got a bit excited. Anyway, thank you so much for this mod! The helicopter cockpits are really great, because i love copters, but i wanted to ask you - do you have sometime in the future in plan a two seat tandem heli cockptit? I know there's an Apache cockpit in Firespitter, but it's not exactly stockalike and frankly - i find it quite ugly. Mainly the texture.

I rescale engines to be similar to their real size, as does AJE for most of it's configs. If you don't want that just comment out or delete any "@rescaleFactor = [value]" lines.

Updating patch to latest version. Fixed weird inlet problem and Shvetsov engines negative horsepower issue. Added SXT checks. Some more minor bug fixes. Fixed SXT patches.

If anyone is interested, I've written some configs for AJE, converting the engines to real world equivalents:

Thank you! I am going to tag @blowfish, he may want to add this to AJE so everyone can use it.

I don't really understand the propellers, unfortunately.  That's really ferram4's or NathanKell's territory.  I can do jets though.

@Citizen247 Thank you so much. That's amazing work right there. I'd give you two likes for a post if I could :P I'll link that post to the OP. Though I assume you intentionally didn't use their (edit: some, not all) real life counterparts for reasons?

If he really didn't match them then it would be great to get a list of exactly which real world engines you were modeling for each. Then maybe Citizen247 could reconfigure the engines. Otherwise, we could ask Ferram as Blowfish pointed out since NathanKell hasn't been around as much as Ferram as of late.

If it wasn't intentional and a list is needed to have a more accurate model, I'd be more than willing to provide.

I tried making replica WW2 planes using this mod, B9 wings, SXT and BDarmory, but the replica Zero and Stuka that I created couldn't take-off because of the lack of engine power.

Now I'm wondering, how do I install Citizen247's config patch?

My guess is it's just a copy and paste to an empty .cfg file inside GameData and it should work with both AJE and this mod installed.

Regarding the power of the engines, first off, you may be referring to the slow take-off due to the low stationary thrust, it should get better while going through the runway. If it's not that and purely because of lack of engine power, it's because I've never took BDA into consideration (mostly made for stock). But, I remember being able to equip two 50cals back then in a zero-like plane.

Some, like the "Kraken" I felt was more like the Griffon than the late model Merlins, but also AJE has a lot of certain types of engines (merlin, R-2800 etc) configs through other mods. SXT-AJE mods provides three different versions of the R-2800 for instance, so it was more a selfish impulse on my part to mix up my part list a bit. It wouldn't be too much work to add some extra configs that configure or add those engines to the actual real-life counterparts if SXT isn't installed though. Thinking about it that would be by far the preferred approach.

The patch just needs to be placed in a text file with a .cfg extension, somewhere in the gamedata directory. If you have any problems let me know.

With these configs I've managed to build replica aircraft that perform somewhat as expected with a heavily tweaked stock air system (I play on a 10x resize, and have dropped drag dramatically, and increased lift slightly, making stock a bit more like FAR). They work under FAR as well, but take a little longer to get in to the air.

A word of warning though, engines will be drastically less powerful with these configs, not more. Stock standard atmosphere with stock aircraft parts will leave most engines incapable of lifting anything. The main problem is that Aero-parts are waaaay heavier than in real life, but also stock air drag is at least 4x too high. I made a basic test plane, made to be as light as possible, and it tipped the scale at one ton, which when you realise the Wright Flyer fully laden was about 320kg, and most world war 1 fighters never broke 600kg, is a lot. What this means is that the early engines, pretty much anything before pre-modern, are drastically underpowered for anything you can build in game.

If early aircraft had weighed a ton, the 12hp engine on the wright flyer would have had to be replaced with a 600hp engine or more, and those didn't appear until the late 1920's...

I'm actually trying to work on some configs that use B9partswitcher to lighten aircraft parts, so they can be made of wood and fabric, aluminium or alloy or something. Wood and Fabric is very light, but also very weak, aluminium is heavier but stronger etc. I've got a test config working, and with it I've managed to fly a small aircraft weighing 585kg fully loaded with a 50hp engine, delivering a maximum of 1kn of thrust. It's flimsy as hell, a bump on the runway can tear it apart, but also takes off at just 20m/s, which means it is similar to early pre-WW1 aircraft. I'm going to expand the configs and release it as a mod as soon as I have something, I'll let you know.

@Citizen247 You're right about the "Kraken" being an analog of the "Griffon" (Spitfire MKXIV's). Though some of them are pretty close to the where I based them from but not exactly (Such as the "Titan" turboprop being a Hercules engine and not a Super Hercules, or the "Cyclone" Radial being the M-62 instead of M-25V). Not that I'm complaining. I was just concerned if you wanted a more accurate model to performance. In which case, like I said, just ask away or if you want a list, I'll post here as well. Or if you don't feel lazy, they're on the download pages' changelogs list (except the initial releases). :P

The M62 was a guess based on how it looked to be honest. I also used the DM605a instead of the 601 because it was the later 109 engine to balance against the Griffon-Spitfire. I've updated the config so that it now provides the following engines:

  • 8A "Spud" = Hispano-Suiza 8Aa
  • 9J "Baron" Rotary = Oberursel U.II
  • WMB VI "Vortex" = BMW VI
  • RR "Count" K.XI = Rolls-Royce Kestral V
  • K-25V "Cyclone" Radial =  Shvetsov ASh-25V
  • KB 601 "Tornado" = Daimler-Benz DB 601
  • KB 601 "Tornado"  = Daimler-Benz DB 605A
  • K-2800 "Bumblebee" Radial = R-2800-18W Double Wasp
  • K-2800 "Bumblebee" Radial = Wright R-3350-26W Duplex-Cyclone
  • K-14 "Divine Wind" Radial = Nakajima Sakae
  • K1710 "Whirlwind" = Allison V-1710-89
  • RR "Marlin" = Rolls-Royce Merlin 46
  • RR "Marlin" = Packard Merlin V-1650-7
  • RR "Kraken" = Rolls-Royce Griffon 65
  • KM-105P "Silver Crow" = Klimov M-105
  • KP-12 "Bear" Kontraprop = Kuznetsov NK-12MV
  • RR K56 "Titan" Turboprop = Rolls-Royce T56 Turboprop
  • KT6A "Kitty" Turboprop = Pratt & Whitney PT6 Turboprop
  • K76 "Predator" Turboprop = Garrett TPE331-10
  • J-56 "Lotus" High-Bypass Turbofan = CFM56-7B18 Turbofan

I've also removed some errors I hadn't caught and given the CFM56 an air-intake so it will actually work now.  A few of the configs are lifted wholesale from existing settings for SXT, because why reinvent the wheel?

There's a few issues, some engines don't provide as much thrust as I think they should, but I'll work on it.

@Citizen247 If you could, I think it's best to update your first post instead since I linked it on the OP already. So people don't have to go to another post or no more need to relink when you update.

That would make more sense :). Done.

Even with AJE config the A6M Zero engine is underpowered.

It barely moves my plane, making it unmanuverable.

I'm getting anxious here :P

The AJE configs will make the engines weaker, not stronger. KSP prop engines often produce far more thrust than real world equivalents, to make up for the fact that KSP atmosphere is still somewhat soup like, and aero parts are made out of Lead. The Airplane plus settings have 28kn for the Zero engine, the AJE setting would give you more like 8kn. For reference, 26kn was the maximum thrust of the Mig15 engine and that plane had a maximum takeoff weight of over six tons and a maximum speed of ~660mph. 28kn is a lot of thrust for a propeller to produce, and the Zero had a loaded weight of about 2800kg. Try making an aircraft that light in stock KSP, it's not possible, mk1 cockpit, engine and tail and you'll be looking at near enough 3tons already.

Oh...

Thank for telling me mate, sorry for my whining

Yeah I understand now.

P-51's loaded weight is 4175 kg I think and that would be about 4.6 tons.

I think the parts are so heavy because this is a rocket game.

Thanks for explaining.
