Help with heatProduction and scaling LV-N

Recommended Posts

I'm creating a "mega" version of the LV-N Nerv in order to reduce part count on one of my mega-tankers.  Instead of 48 engines, I'm going to use 6 engines that are 8x more powerful.

I've scaled up the physical size (x2 in all dimensions), mass (x8), maxThrust (x8) and alternator rate (x8).  But I'm not sure whether and how much I should scale up heatProduction.

A single LV-N has heatProduction = 250.  Multiplying it by 8 produces completely unreasonable amounts of heat.  Can anyone recommend a fair value I can use that would generate roughly equivalent heat as 8 stock LV-N's?

Ok, I found out heatProduction already scales with mass (thermalMass?), so I just bumped it up to 300 (to make it a little hotter than 8 individual engines would be).

Yep, that's my understanding. 300 will be a fairly hot engine, which of course is what you're aiming for here. It sounds like you have this nailed.

Are there formula for ModuleEnginesFX/heatProduction, mass and the Core Heat xFer (kW) or Max Cooling (kW) of radiators ?

UPD. found  https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/156612-rocket-engine-heat-production-makes-no-sense/

heat output[kW] = heatProduction * standardSpecificHeatCapacity * internalHeatProductionFactor * mass * throttleSetting * 0.4975

so looks like heatProduction is still linear
