I'm assuming your asking how to post pictures on the forums?  Have you tried imgur?  You can as well link pictures through the post editor by clicking insert other media.  I myself recommend Puush for single images, however Imgur is much better for linking large albums, through the button on the farthest right side of the post editor buttons, the one with the "i" in  a dark box.

Is it possible to do it without an external hosting service? Like, what KIND of file does it need to be to post it directly into the reply box? Maybe @SQUAD could help me.

Nope, not possible. It's not a 'file' that gets posted into the reply box, it's a link that points to a file (on an external server) ... as all those above have pointed out to you. Go check out Imgur.

Edit: The only other way would be for Squad to give administration rights/privileges to the forums server, where you could then store your image file and incorporate it directly into the HTML forums generated page. Not gunna happen.

Yes, external hosting is the only option.  It doesn't have to be imgur, but that's by far the most popular (probably because it's so easy to use, and doesn't require having an account or signing in or anything).

So as long as your image is in a format that imgur (or whatever hosting service) supports, you're fine-- therefore .jpg should be okay.

Moving to Kerbal Network, since this is a discussion about the forum software rather than KSP itself.
