Background: "Solar System SCIENCE!!!" is a Science Mode save I first had in KSP 0.90. I have remade that save for every new version of KSP, and this is what I am doing in the current 1.1.2/1.1.3 save:

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Current Status:

  • Science: Over 4,900
  • Active Missions: 7
  • Flags: 10
  • Furthest Kerbal Landing: Minmus
  • Furthest Probe: Hermes Complex (Moho)
  • Planets Visited by Kerbals: Kerbin, Mun, Minmus
  • Planets Visited by Probes: Kerbin, Mun, Minmus, Moho, Duna
  • Deaths: 0
  • Failed Missions: At least 5
  • Time: Year 2, Day 100-something

Starting Story:

The construction of Feronia Station is nearing completion. After the Docking Module, all that needs to be added to the main structure is at least one Crew Module for the station's occupants. The rocket carrying the Docking Module was launched on Year 2, Day 167. However, one of the boosters destroyed a stability wing during booster separation, and the orbit of the Docking Module became too tilted for a quick rendezvous. To worsen the situation, a recently ejected piece of debris destroyed the Clamp-o-Tron Sr. on Docking Leg 4, leaving only a regular Clamp-o-Tron on that leg. The flight directors at Triple-S argued what to do with the failing mission, and decided to keep going to Feronia Station. It was decided to use Docking Leg 4 as the place for the manned Volare spacecrafts to dock to, since they use regular Clamp-o-Trons. However, the Docking Module still needs to correct its orbit and dock to Feronia in order to succeed.

Fun Facts:

  • All of the events in this thread involving Solar System SCIENCE are mostly real. Things like the flight control Kerbals are added to create an interesting story.
  • I have been doing Solar System SCIENCE in Kerbal Space Program since December of 2014.

The fate of the Docking Module and more events are coming soon.

FERONIA STATION SHENANIGANS (PART 1)

Recently, the spaceflight directors at Triple-S (Solar System SCIENCE!!!) decided to continue the Feronia Docking Module mission despite the blown-off Clamp-o-Tron Sr. and the tilted orbit. Gene and Seth Kerman designed a maneuver node to correct the offset inclination and prepare the spacecraft for further maneuvers. Jiljas, Jove, and Joun Kerman were in charge of executing the commands that would make the Docking Module complete the 1-second burn. About 25 minutes later, Jove Kerman pressed the button to start the burn.

All of a sudden, things went haywire. Warning lights went up around Mission Control as the tv screens showed that the burn time was...increasing!

Gene went up to Jove, panicking. "What's going on?!" Gene demanded. "Why is this...whatever-it-is...even happening?"

"This just isn't right!" Jove exclaimed. "I directed the Docking Module right on the node. This is against our laws of physics!" To prove his point, Jove put up the Spacecraft Navigation Simulator on the Big Screen for all of Mission Control to see. "This is an impossible situation unless our craft is being attack--"

"Sir!" Jiljas called out to Gene. "Our radar indicated that the Docking Module is rotating out of our control!"

Gene's panic level started to rise to an unkerbal level. He knew that he had to stay collected during these events, or else Triple-S would have to make him retire. At 65 (Kerbal) years old, Gene is by far the oldest Kerbal ever to be the head of Mission Control, since the age limit went up to 60. Gene's excellent work had kept him in prime position. But if he was thrust out of position, another less "control" Kerbal would replace him, and Gene didn't think he would succeed at all.

He swallowed, and shout out, "Cut the thrust!"

Joun pressed the "Abort" button, and the engine stopped firing. "Jiljas. Jove, Joun - can you guys run a diagnostic on what happened there?" Gene asked. Jiljas turned around, holding a piece of just-printed paper. On it was this symbol:

Every Kerbal jaw in the room fell to the floor. "I'm sorry, boss," Jiljas said, "but we got hacked."

Gene sighed, silently cursing those annoying hackers. "Alright then, you know what to do now."

Jiljas nodded sadly, then turned and pressed a button marked "Code Red."

All of Mission Control looked down as the Docking Module's autopilot fired the engine in retrograde, putting the vessel on a course to death by Kerbin.

..........

About a day after the burnup of the Feronia Docking Module, Gene was returning to the Mission Control building when he was approached by co-director Coleson Kerman.

"Hey, Gene."

"Hey."

"I just wanted to say...sorry about the failure of the Docking Module yesterday. I know this was going to be monumental and all - the completion of the Feronia Station, and your first station as well."

Gene sighed. "Thanks, Coleson. At least the backup Docking Module was started before the accident."

There was a long pause, before Coleson broke the silence. "Look, Gene, I know that you put effort into Triple-S day and night with all your enthusiasm, but I would like to recommend something to you: a vacation."

The color drained from Gene's face. This is it, he thought. Triple-S is going to try and wind me down to convince me to retire. I should've known this day was coming.

Gene managed to find his voice. "So...which Kerbal will be taking my place while I'm gone?"

Coleson smirked at his fellow Kerbal. "I think you're about to find out."

Gene shuddered and turned around at the sound of footsteps. Coming out of the Astronaut Complex with Bill, Bob, and Val was the Kerbal Gene never wanted to take this place. The Kerb-man, the Kerb-myth, the Kerb-legend:

Jebediah Kerman.

Jeb said his farewells to the rest of the Original Four as he hauled a metal case towards the Mission Control building. "Hi guys!" he greeted. "Sorry if I'm late...Bob's Minmus Froyo is just too good to get away from!"

Gene wanted to comment on Jeb's unhealthy habit of eating anything planet-related, when Coleson spoke up. "Okay, Jeb, your office will be down Corridor 3 and in Room A. Don't move the Plutonium reactor in the Lounge Room, though."

"Thanks, man!" Jeb said. Then he turned to Gene. "Don't worry, Boss. I have big plans for Triple-S while you'll be gone, and they will really crank up the SCIENCE!"

Jeb walked into Mission Control as Gene swallowed his bile. Last time Jeb has even been partially involved with Mission Control, most of the launches had failed. And Gene knew well enough that when Jeb says he has "big plans," they spell only one thing: Disaster.
