Tech Tree refurbish suggestion

Recommended Posts

Hello world! We all love kerbal space program (why would I be writing on the forums?) and with the new KerbNet and satellite network feature, I was thinking that maybe the whole tech tree should be refurbished in a little bit more of a realistic way. Probes for example should be unlock able FIRST, along with cheap solar panels and antennae. Then, after collecting science, and unlock new parts, manned space flight comes after that. Another thing would be that certain parts unlock when you do certain science experiments. Say you do a butt load of experiments around Kerbol, since Kerbol is very radioactive, you learn how to make the 'Nerva' engine. Get the point? Also maybe (this is more of an extra suggestion that doesn't matter if it isn't in the game) craftable parts. It could work so along with regular parts you unlock components, and with these components you can build custom parts with custom names. Just a suggestion, I love kerbal space program, and although I am not personally working on it, I want it to do well.

sincerely,

stelum

There are many people who DON'T want "historical" probes-first approach. I am not one of them, but IMO the tree should branch out as early as possible to give everyone the choice of how they want to progress. That way nobody forces anybody to play their way and everyone is happy.

And science experiments should be something that does not unlock you more tech. Unless it's actually connected to it, like readings during a fast atmospheric flight unlocks/speeds up the process of researching the Whiplash engine. Science points was a terrible idea.

I don't wish to participate in the argument of more realistic tech trees, but I'll make a correction; early probes did NOT have solar panels. Besides, it makes more sense that early flights will have to be restricted by something (here the battery)

I prefer starting manned. I think that it's more fun than starting unmanned and I couldn't care less about a historically realistic progression as long as the progression is fun.

That too. What do you think on my idea of specialised science experiments? Like, you experiment with high vectoring parts and get the vector engine?

Give more detail. We've seen a thousand minor variations on that idea suggested. What are the exact requirements for unlocking the Vector (via any path, including 'just buy it with science' if that's still an option)?

I think what he means is an unlocking progression based on the parts previously used. So if you wanted to get to the Vector engine you would have to use/test/experiment with the Swivel engine.

I prefer having a choice of how I want to start each time I decide to start a career save from the scratch.

Well, sort of, but not exactly. I'll try explain some more. Say you want the Nuclear Engine, instead of buying it with science, you actually go and do experiments related to nuclear power/radiation etc. then, when you perform the right experiments, a message will pop up saying: "With the new knowledge we have learnt, we designed a new part!" That part will be the nuke engine, because you performed experiments on radiation and gravity (gravioli detector + new science part) and performed experiments with heat (thermometre) therefore, you learn how to utilize parts that use nuclear power, and unlock the nuke engine. My english isn't the best, but I tried to explain best I can.
