What?!

This has been there, deliberately, for a long time.  The visible jet part is meant only to be the exhaust nozzle, while the bulk of the jet's mass is hidden out of sight inside the fuel tank or nacelle to which the nozzle attaches. There was a brief period (1.0.5?) where that invisible engine was made visible, VTOL plane builders rioted, and now we have this.

Funny. Now I know what is the reason why it is so hard to build a statically unstable plane in ksp that is based off of a real plane which is also statically unstable while keeping part count low and not using ballast or part clipping.

Thing is, I discovered this crap while building a missile which is about 2 times as long as the visible part of the jet engine.

In our defense, we were advocating for a tweakable to hide the turbine.  Squad chose to just remove them entirely.

You can turn them on with a Module Manager patch, they are in the game.

Where memory is a precious resource, removing it altogether is the better choice. Making a tweakable and having to load it even if you are not using it does take up memory.  And by the looks of it(without going into that shared thread), it seems silly to have it anyway if it is just going to be hidden.

Leaving it in the code is a nice gesture, however, for those who might wish to mod it back in.  And those of us who don't care can enjoy having some RAM elbow room.

Should have just left the turbine in there. Could've just been modded out for stock vtols, which are a super rare case anyway, but now nobody got turbines. Found that rather disappointing.

Btw, probably was no tweakable because afaik there was also no switch module for stock.

also in effect helps with making planes

When this was implemented, I found the effect was the total opposite - all my planes became broken and making new ones meant unlearning all the old rules and learning new ones. :(

Also as a builder and avid-fan of VTOLs the mass offset is a real bummer. What we have at the moment is a bad compromise between realism and aesthetics.

The intention is that if you attach the engine and intake to a fuselage, you get the mostly right balance of mass.

Place some engines on a rover, nozzles up, and drive it around at high speed :) Funny driving with CoM below the ground.
