Is there any Gold on the Mun or Minmus?

That's part of the point of this mod. Use your scanners. Find out for yourself and don't spoil it for other players.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been at a loss for some time now as to where to go with KSP. I thought mining the other resources would hold my attention but the financial payoff for resource return to Kerbin is pretty minuscule. I could presume then to create a sustainable economy with this mod, correct?

I like building big structures & systems and this mod seems like a good focus for that.

The resources in base KSP are more to enable further exploration than to make money.  This mod's focus is on making money.   (There's also mods like EL or MKS, who's focus is on building and/or colonizing.)

Excellent. *finger tenting intensifies*

Happy to hear the mod has piqued your interest.

If you do give it a go please let me know how you feel on the value of Unobtanium (if you ever find it) and the weight of gold.

Those are the two values I still want to balance out a bit.

Have a good one.

*snip*

the weight of gold.

So after significant trail & error, (pretty standard for me) I have a working gold recovery-to-kerbin system going. I found some deposits on [REDACTED], so that was [DATA EXPUNGED]. My system consists of multiple landers(drilling/ore storage/power, drilling/smelting/goldstorage, general ore storage, general gold storage. All with adequate cooling & solar.), and transports from surface to storage on station, transports from [REDACTED] Station to Kerbin Station, & transport to Kerbin surface.

The only really tricky one was transport to Kerbin surface, because if you try to land more than 1 tanks worth of gold AND splash down, you are going to the bottom. So you have to land it. Getting the re-entry numbers right so you maximize return takes a few trips.

I'd say gold's weight is on the light side, but not bad. You can still maneuver a transport in space with 6 full tanks of refined gold quite well, but you do need to pack a good engine & bookoo fuel.

I did a temp game & sent probes to friggin everywhere & found Unobtainium on [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], but never pursued it any farther in that save. I plan to do the same exploitation in my main save in a bit.

Nice mod, much fun, so cash, very like.

I'm considering trying this mod. I understand it doesn't support OPM? Any plans to add such support? And is it hardcoded, which planets have the resources? I thought it is usually random, with some preset restrictions. This randomization would make things more fun, wouldn't it?

If @Dewar has specified values for all existing planets/moons, than adding a default would add gold/unobtainium to every body added by a mod pack/any non-specified places.
(Though this might result in gas giants having surface desposits of unobtainable unobtainium!)

Edit: Saving you spoilers:

Spoiler

I took a look into the configs: You will find gold on modded planets not explicitly supported, but no unobtainium, as there is no GLOBAL_RESOURCE for it.

I installed this mod and have noticed two things (I am yet to discover gold anywhere, let alone mine it). The narrow-band resource scanner is now available before the M700, which seems wrong to me. As to M700, it now has, with SCANsat, three buttons "Start Resource Scan" in its right-click menu. I suspect the reason is two resource scan modules you added in Patches.cfg. It also means that it requires 3 times more EC to scan for all the resources simultaneously. Is there a way to include GoldOre and Unobtainium to the default scanning mode or was it an intentional decision?

Keep looking there is gold out there.

The problem is not presence (or absence) of GoldOre, but issues with the way the mod handles scanners. They are not critical, but should also be easy to fix.

Another issue when using this mod with SCANsat: when I select Gold Ore in the big map, it shows the map for the last selected resource (e.g. ordinary Ore) instead. Unobtainium and planetary overlay display correctly, however.

I'll look into it if I can, moving to another country atm so a little busy.

One thing to note, is I have found the above problem only when there was no available data one the specific resource. If you do a full scan are you still unable to switch to the updated gold ore map?

I have been meaning to add support for a number of modded planet packs, including OPM.

Though as mentioned in a previous post, I will be taking a hiatus from development for the next month or so.

You could always add support yourself in the meantime as a quick peruse in the config files should show how unobtanium is spawned, it is quite intuitive.

Have a good one.

Also I've been meaning to make gold a bit heavier.

Thanks for your feedback.

The issue with gold not showing in SCANsat's big map was even when it had already been scanned. Like I said, the planetary overlay worked ok (and showed a deposit of GoldOre somewhere), but the big map didn't.

Speaking of gold (and gold ore) density, it would seem that it is already too much. Comparing it to USI resources, both RareMetals and ExoticMinerals already have more value per kg than GoldOre (and minerals more than refined Gold despite being a raw resource). Of course, you don't have to adjust your mod to MKS' settings, but given its popularity and the effort @RoverDude invested in balancing stuff out, I'd take it into consideration. TBH, I decided that I'll try to go for one of these USI resources before mining gold. They just give you more ROI.

Are USI rare metals and exotic materials an additional addon for USI? or are they distributed with all of the USI mods. They could be the reason why scansat was having problems, as there are a limited number of ore IDs in scansat.

As to the balance, I haven't played that aspect of the USI mods and wasn't aware of them. I'll look into it, but are the exotic materials and rare metals available in abundance within the kerbin sphere of influence? Are they available at the same position within the tech tree?

I'll look into the patch for the scanners, I have done no testing on the mod for a few updates. Previously only one "start resource scan" button was available on the scanners. Perhaps the mm config is now duplicating the module instead of simply updating it.

thanks for bringing this to my attention.

As for the scanners being available out of stock order, this was a design decision. As I had previously almost never used the narrow band scanner; I thought it a rewarding method of perhaps finding a gold ore deposit before the m700 was available, whilst finally using a cool scanning method that I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with.
