I liked that part too, but I found myself thinking the physics seemed off. The second Star Destroyer should have been pushed away before that much damage was done, IMO. They were trying to muster up reverse so there shouldn't be anything in space to hold it in place. to absorb that much damage.

Maybe its related to the "device", that keeps the spaceships up there in the first place. They are clearly not in orbit, since they remain stational to the gate/tower below.

Well, yeah. It's Star Wars. Chasing princesses and breaking the laws of physics since 1977.

Probably this.  The starships above Scarif were clearly relying on their repulsorlifts to stay up.  IIRC, when the dead star destroyer hits the not-dead one, the not-dead one is angled "towards" the impact and thus the repulsors would have tried to force it back into the colliding destroyer.

Imagine what would have happened if Darth Vader had chosen to throw the guy at the door into the wall before the other guy instead of after...

Also, did they reuse Padme's or Anakin's theme for Jyn? Time for some soundtrack scavenging...

Edit: YUP.

Just saw it this morning with my family. Now THAT was a Star Wars movie! :) Way better than Episode VII (and I liked Episode VII). I would actually place that up with the original trilogy in terms of quality.

I can just imagine it will be a quite hard time for lots of children (you can watch it with 6 years in Germany), having EVERYONE remotely important die isnt usual in such movies and atleast i would have had trouble with that when i was so young.

Eh, my daughter is almost 6, and she loved it. She's seen all of the Star Wars movies, even Episode III. The hardest part of taking her to a Star Wars movie is that the previews aren't always appropriate for her. (This time they had a preview for The Mummy in front of it, which was way too horror-movie for her.)

For real though, I did like the movie. The attack on Scarif reminded me of a typical WWII beach landing on a Pacific island, and I couldn't help but whisper potential captions to my friends.

As the stormtroopers charge out the door and towards the rebels: "US Marines hold fast against a Japanese banzai charge.

Saipan, 1944. (Colorized)"

Makes sense, Star Wars fighter action is mostly inspired by WW2 ones.
Remember seeing an fight between US fighter and an Japanese cruiser and my first thought was Star Wars.
Here the role of the fighters was to destroy or suppress the AAA for the torpedo bombers who had come in low, straight and close to drop the torpedoes making them easy to hit.

Never been stated why they combine heavy fire from capital ships and fighters, fan theory is that its to exploit shield fails. The heavy bombardment take out shield sections but is not accurate enough to aim for the same segment twice.

I too thought there were obvious cues taken from US in the Pacific for the look of the rebels storming the beaches in R1. Can't really "fault" them on that one given the obvious not-z (seems the name of the National Socialist German Workers Party of WWII Germany is a censored word on the forum) inspirations in imperial costuming, and WWII dogfights being the inpiration for x-wings vs ties.

Here's a thought I had tho...

Those dark armored stormtroopers, who seemed to me to chatter somewhat like Droids? They look like they were at least inspired by, if not are supposed to be, Dark Troopers.

Pre movie, early models were supposed to be clone troopers who were cyberized using the same tech that built Darth Vader, later models were straight up Droids... those later ones being the big badies in the video game Dark Forces.

I wonder if it's just supposed to be an easter egg kind of thing, or if there's more to it... Obviously, Kyle Kataarn lifting the Death Star plans has been disproven / made non-canon, but I just wonder.

Net searches yielded nothing.

I saw it last night, and was thoroughly impressed. It's a Star Wars movie for adults.
 Minor observations:

-The CGI used to insert humans into dramatic roles isn't quite there yet. Tarkin and Leia were just artificial enough to bring me out of the moment.
-I don't think there was quite enough character development for the rebel spies, and they had too many one- liners. This made their deaths too cheap IMO.
-That second star destroyer must've been built by the lowest bidder. It RUDed way too easily.

Did anyone else notice the Ghost at the battle? It was never mentioned and the camera never focused on it, but it was there.

Best,
-Slashy

I did not spot the Ghost myself but after seeing a few R1 easteregg clips on youtube I now know when to look for it.
And there are several more nods to SW Rebels. On Yavin 4 Chopper can be seen running in the background and a call goes out over the speakers calling for General Syndulla. And there is of course 'Project Dark Sabre'. A clear nod to the Mandalorian black lightsabre.
It is said even a Lasat can be seen in the background of Saw Gererra's base on Jedha. Since Lasats are rare this could possibly be our big  friend Garazeb 'Zeb' Orrelios

The one thing that really stood out to me was how seamlessly this movie transitioned into episode IV at the end. Not just the storyline, but the actual sets, lighting, and effects. It was like the whole movie climbed into a time machine and temporally displaced back to 1976. It leaves off at the exact moment Episode IV begins, and it *feels* like it was shot the same way in the same places.
I felt a sense of actual deja vu as the movie came to a close. It was *that* convincing.

I personally didn't miss the "crawl" in this movie because it portrays what happened in the crawl for episode IV.

Best,

I loved the movie, but I especially loved two things: 1, that they omitted that cringy "I rebel" line from the trailer, and 2, that they did Tarkin and Leia perfectly. If I didn't know better, I'd be sure they just built a time machine and went back to convince Peter Cushing to do the part himself.

Wow I never thought anybody would think this. I'm far more in this camp:

I've never seen the show, but I do think I noticed an R5-D4 droid from it in the back of one of the ships. I'm not sure why it stood out to me except they probably put it front and center so fans would notice it tucked in there.

I didn't think Vader was that into puns, but whatever...

At least he still had a sense of humour.....as twisted and sick as it is.
