How long is it appropriate to wait before taking over a popular mod?

Station Science hasn't been updated by ethernet to 1.2 yet. I forked, recompiled  and created a temporary release but after 1.2.2 it requires some changes.

I'm willing to take over the mod on a permanent basis and have PMed Ethernet.

How long should one wait for a reply before going ahead and creating an new thread and releasing an "official" release?

Also will moderators edit the original post on the original thread to redirect links to the newer version?

Personally, I like seeing other people compiling a mod I've worked on because I'm selfish and editing other people's toys is easier than making toys of my own.

For waiting time, I'd feel comfortable waiting for a few days.  Maybe a week if that's what feels right to you.  It looks like GPLv3 (the licensing for the source code) is pretty permissive.  Personally, I'd attribute credit to the previous OP (ethernet) and reply to the main topic with a link to your new thread.  Just make sure it doesn't have the same name as the previous version to keep confusion at a minimum.

You should also see when @ethernet was last online. If it was a few days ago, then I'd recommend a longer waiting period, but if it's been months, I would go ahead immediately. EDIT: Looks like it's been a few months since they've visited. I'd go ahead and make it official.

It depends.  In this case, he's been gone long enough.

Personally, I always try to contact the author, and, if no reply, I usually go ahead.  I'm always prepared to relinquish it back if the author comes back in a reasonable time.

Re. the original thread, when you create the new thread, send a message to the moderators explaining the situation that you've adopted the mod and ask that the old one be locked.  Be sure to add a final post to it directing people to your new thread.
