Good tips for Jool 5

Recommended Posts

Depends on how you plan to do it.

Jool 5 has low-g vacuum, high-g vacuum, high-g oxygen and a potential extreme aerobrake on the Jool capture.

First call is: are you landing one vessel on all five, or is it going to be a mothership plus specialised landers deal?

For the first option, you just want an ISRU equipped SSTO that will hold five Kerbals. Not too hard to do in either Mk2 or Mk3 form.

For the second...go as crazy as you like. Compact or huge, either will work. Just make sure you've got either a big heatshield or enough gas for the Jool capture, and try to take advantage of gravity assists from the moons. Get it right and you can capture very cheaply.

One inportant tip: If your Laythe/Tylo upper stage return vehicle is no larger than 5 tons, then you can put it on a SSTO launch rocket using a C7 1.25-2.5m adapter, orange Rockomax jumbo tank and an optional smaller Rockomax tank. Tested on Kerbin (which requires more delta-v to get into space than both moons). Do not forget to use KER for better delta-v estimation.

I found it simpler to just Hyperedit the lander into orbit around the target moon and perform the test there rather than faffing about with non-standard hardware in a different environment.

Huh, what? Am I wrong again?

I used two landers, one for Tylo and another for Laythe and the rest. After Laythe the upper stage of that lander could hit Vall Pol and Bop. The Tylo lander and transfer stage separated from the mothership well before Jool SOI in order to capture at Tylo and the mothership and Laythe/everything else lander headed for capture at Laythe.

I used a large irsu spaceplane which landed everywhere except Tylo.    It had a lander in its cargo bay for that job.

Landing on Tylo is tough.  Delta V for the round trip to the surface and back is huge.

Mission report of mine is here.  There are some videos.    Main lesson - don't bother with a rover, waste of mass.   Keep the Tylo lander as small as possible.
