KSP Challenge: Space Station Week!

My favorite station I made was the Orbital Shipyard "Allure of the Stars". It was a functional station for assembling interplanetary ships.

There were no RoverDude's weldable docking ports at the time, so I assembled it via KIS. Took me around 15 launches.

Building "Ark of the Red Seas" in the docks.

This was my initial design, but my computer couldn't handle the partcount:

This is Spacedock one, boring name aside, it's my central hub for the kerbin lko, all the big ships that need to be aseembled in space goes trough this station

Basically it's a useless dockyard, ya know, rule of cool and everything....

(The thing on the right with a nuke is a little mun lander docked)

I mainly use it as the starting point for all the long outer-kerbin missions, hope you like it!

Love your optimism :D

To be honest, I have more failed missions now than, say, a year ago.

Not because they are harder missions but because I'm cockier.

I often don't even bother looking up the dV requirements for a mission but just throw some weird thing together and set off into the heavens. Then there is an "Oh, Trump" moment when I realise there is no atmosphere and need 2kdV just to make orbit.

Once I have tried everything ethical or otherwise (including landing the crewmen on their heads), I tend to abandon the little green freaks to their fate as icicles floating forever in the outer reaches of the system.

Having a base out that way means I may be tempted, when really bored, to refuel their craft and send them home. Jeb should be pleased, he's been out there for about 3 years real time.

BEHOLD! THE ONLY SPACE STATION I HAVE EVER BUILT EVER (I'm bad at docking)

it2WapZ.png

I should get an updated picture, but it adds nothing much

its called Blavso, and I made it for a contract, I still need to add 2000 units of LF to it before its completed, so its a LONG way from being complete

but I'm still proud of it

Here is my WIP station. First real station I've attempted:

Made mainly with @Nertea parts. (I love his work.)

I have plans for a pure fuel depot later one after I get this complete or get tired of it. (I have 10 more pieces to add...)

The Legalized Alcohol and Gambling Station, aka LAGS. It was built for a Bases & Stations contract to build a Space Casino.

Launching the core was tricky. It was too big to fit in a fairing, so I had to use Shuttle tails as fins. Pic taken after a few asteroid tugs had been been attached. Once completed, an engineer with a KASdriver removed all the thrusters and such that were no longer needed.

With Snark's IndicatorLights mod, it lights up like a Xmas tree!

Kerbin Station Delta (aka "Fish"). In the foreground, the section built by Fish-Soup Kerbals:

The section built by Chicken-Soup Kerbals is under and just past the truss, and it connects to the section built by the Cabbage-Soup Kerbals in the foreground:

From this angle you can see the Chicken-Soup Kerbal section to the left and the Cabbage-Soup Kerbal section to the right:

I love science mods but try to install as few other part mods as possible. Off the top of my head, this uses DMagic Orbital Science, a slightly scaled down Station Science (so it fits on and is light enough to be lofted up by the Protein launch vehicle), KIS/KAS, Tiktaalik airlocks (I'm considering using Stockalike Station Parts when I build this for Career), and HGR (apologies if I missed any other obvious mods).

Acheron Station around the Mün. In the back is the refueller docked, nicknamed "Starfish", that hauls thousands of units of fuel at a time from the surface. Sideways are 2 shuttles: one meant for landing and returning to the station and the other one, ion-powered, with tons of delta V for transporting 2 Kerbals at a time between stations.

I'm planning to build a similar station around Minmus to serve as a midway station in my interplanetary trips. The cost is pretty high (over 2 million kredits with launch into low Kerbin orbit in one go), so, for now, I have to complete more contracts to fund these monsters.

Old 0.90 Minmus station:

Jool Mobile Shipyard (also 0.90):

Lots of part welding on those first two stations.

1.2.2 Duna Transfer Craft (has docking ports and crew capacity of ~60, using as a research lab until its transfer window comes up, so counting it as a station...).  Uses real-world density for its LH2 tanks, which is why it is so large.  Dry = ~200t, wet = ~400t.  Powered by 5x NRV engines converted to run on LH2.  Carries a small re-usable duna lander in a saddle-truss.  Maneuvers like a beached whale.

Custom shader on the large solar panels allows for back-lighting / light bleed-through:

And a 'real' station from early in my last career game -- Minmus Station Alpha.  Its a hodge-podge of modules that were added as they were unlocked.  About 3/4 of it is scheduled to be de-orbited (as soon as the attached lab is done processing).  Docked is a small lander (left), and two crew-transfer vehicles (the Orion pods, one for the current crew, one for the just-arrived crew; usually only one docked at a time).

I've built many other stations, but it looks like those are all that I have screenshots of :(

A science station that had an over-powered ascent core that was expanded to a science/fuel base LKO

But probably one of my larger bases would be my Mun Waystation, almost 30 kerbals and over 50 years of hab-time(in case the colonization modules ever ran out of supplies)

My favourite station is and will ever be the MIR station.. i once tried to build it using mostly stock parts.. but when a new update came out.. it deorbited the station by accident so i couldn't add the last section.. so here's the album of the station when it was under construction before it went up in flames (like the real one):

<grabs his hat, tosses it into the ring>

In no particular order other than that which I spot it from my imgur stash:

Kerbal Orbital Science Complex:

Should be noted, this station, was a SINGLE LAUNCH, take a look at it on the pad:

Kerbal International Space Station:

Doxie Station MK1:

Those are the 3 stations I have pictures of, well, not counting my Mun base, but, thats a picture for a different challenge, which, hey, can that be a suggestion for a new challenge for next week? Bases?

Update on my station - About 80-85% done:

RgA6sGd.png

More with the updated album: http://imgur.com/a/q34k0

Yay for modular construction: I'm dropping 2 nodes (one of two labs and a docking port extension) as this sucker is over 200 parts already (excluding the shuttle that happens to be there in the above shot...) I'm now running at about half real-time with the station loaded and it takes a bit to actually load once in physics range (about 30s it feels like.) But this thread reminded me, so I'll still be added (at least) three more nodes (Science experiments, "advance" comms, and at least one dedicated engine node for moving the station if I felt like it....)

EDIT: @SQUAD @Badie See spoiler-

Spoiler

May I suggest something for the next "challenge"? How about "Satellite Networks"? "Contend" for:

  • Completeness - How well you can cover the Kerbal Solar System and/or corss connect locations and/or...
  • Artistry - Fanciest looking 3D spirograph-y collection of connections.
  • Design sense - Show off the satellites.

As a bonus, it would show off a new(er) feature of KSP. Space Stations are more an exercise in stressing KSP to the limit (I've been running out of RAM on a 16GB system; the editor hates me when I need to work on the station) and artistic sense (that and mod selection/showcasing).

And maybe change the title to something else from Challenge... Dunno what... "Space Call"? "Launch Call"? It's just "Challenge" seems a bit of a misnomer at this point.

Some pretty great contraptions here! beautifull to see the creativity!

Time to pitch in, here is my 'contraption' from my first (and only) sandbox game, the BSS (Bob's Space Station) with a refuelship on it's way :)

1k0.jpg

1k0.jpg

View from the tanker, needs 3 huge tugs to get her to dock with the BSS :sealed:
1k0.jpg

My first 'carreer' contract station, needed 2000 LF and accomodate at least 5 kerbal. So I've decided to make it a 'rescue station' for getting stranded Kerbals back to Kerbin. There is a refuel ship docked to refuel monopropless ships, and a long range rescue vehicle.

1k0.jpg

A low orbit rescue and deorbit tug on it's way back to the station took a few seconds to pose for the photo :D

So this week's the challenge is to share a space station you've built at some point? That's pretty weak

Well... it is actually a really difficult challenge for me... I don't have my gaming rig for the next two weeks :( I miss KSP and Stellaris damn it! :'(
