Some kind of tiles on the windward side. Hello Shuttle?

HOLD ON? HEX TILES? THIS THING IS COOLER THAN I THOUGH!

I absolutely love it when Elon tweets about Starship.

So, no more pure silver Starship, I guess. :/

Its still steel but the hex times are used because of thermal expansion and to regulate methane flow to segment.
Other option is to use titanium for the tiles.

Actually, I'm very confused on the whole hex tile thing. What are the hex tiles? Are they a temporary thing? What are hey made of? We need more answers- probably have to wait until we get a proper presentation.

Probably something similar to what the Shuttle TPS was made of. I think it’s more or less permanent, but who knows with SpaceX these days.

Ceramics with a high melting point and low thermal conductivity most likely

Well, hexagons can tile around a cylinder easily enough, but I'm not sure what they'll do for the curved nose. I've heard that you can do some things with pentagons and hexagons together to approximate curved surfaces.

Ok looks like I was wrong again :)

Yes one way to get something to work is to try everything.

They are called "hecks-tiles" because "Heck! It's hot!" is what you can usually hear from the servicing team.

Looks like its build of an stack of the old https://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Rockomax_X200-8_Fuel_Tank tanks with the old texture.
Yes something who is shiny will show off regularities far more than something non reflective.

And if you have never seen an Tesla you have not been in Norway :)
Here they are pretty common because of the tax benefits for electrical cars.

Depends on what the tiles are made of.

A different steel might have a diff coefficient of expansion, right? hence a need for gaps (and maybe transpiration is between tiles?)
