The choice is not: drink the SpaceX Koolaid 100%, or hate SpaceX 100%.

^This!

Also, for a long time I thought @DAL59's profile pic is that of a shark opening it's mouth, Jaws-style... On closer inspection, it turns out to be a BFR's front view...

I will see myself out....

I don't hate SpaceX at least because its projects are KSP steroids.

But I have a strong feeling of another Excalibur Almaz and Mars One.

(Btw the first one was owning a tested hardware.)

I’d agree with @tater, you really can’t put them in the same sentence.

  • SpaceX can into space
  • Excalibur Almaz can into used capsule
  • MarsOne can into Skype calls

I looked up MarsOne and no one takes it seriously :D.. (Not that it's *supposed* to be taken seriously!)

Invest in this really risky proposition, and if you're lucky you'll break even? That doesn't fly!

It is, or it seems to be among the less knowledgeable people that come across r/space. Plus they had contracted LockMart for a lander study and tried to get Musk-senpai to notice them, but He said “nah”.

They sound amateurish (“just build us a different-diameter Dragon!”) but committed.

Mars One is a scam. They have no hardware, they don't even have a good plan.

They're not really a scam- I think they are seriously trying, but are just completely failing in every way, and don't have 1% the money they would need.

They were picking "astronauts," were they not? A little premature, don't you think, with literally zero ability to get someone to Mars? They's show "Red Dragon" images as some sort of Mars colony, as if it was even theoretically possible to send people to Mars in a Dragon capsule.

It is theorectically possible, just that elon disliked the plan.

No, it's not. You think X people can live in a Crew Dragon capsule even just for the transit time to Mars? It was never remotely possible, and SpaceX never even suggested it was. People conflated Red Dragon with the ability to send humans, just as other conflate the claims of Orion being able to do a direct entry (at Earth) from Mars as people flying to Mars on Orion, instead of Orion being a tiny part of a far larger spacecraft.

From a technical standpoint, it's certainly possible if you beefed up the life support systems and only took one person. But, from a psychological standpoint... I wouldn't want to be that person.

No, it's not. The beefing up would be larger than the spacecraft. The stated Red Dragon proposal only landed 1 ton of cargo (everything that was not the capsule itself) on Mars. That's unmanned, with no LS at all. There's not room to fit a person, and even just the transit time worth of stuff, much less any excess to live off of once you arrive. The entire concept (Mars One) was done by people who can't manage simple arithmetic as far as I can tell.

This is inaccurate.  On the Mars One website, it says they will built a transfer module with extra habitation space and fuel. Still crowded compared to BFR though.  And they have no money or higher.  Also, they are training astronauts because they want to sell astronauts to other space companies(though this won't ever happen).

I only looked at their site when it was first a thing, they likely changed it after people said they were insane. Building a hab module is relatively easy as a third party. Adding propellants is rather more complicated for a group with zero technical ability, on a spacecraft they don't own (SpaceX has never said they'd sell a Dragon to anyone, they so far have only provided services). Also, they have no way to get those props, etc into space (F9 architecture has a max of how many hours between S2 relights? Can they even dock anything with S2 attached? Mars One would also need to develop a service module to facilitate this at the very least. It's hokum.

Well, this is interesting. Didn’t know about this one.

Apparenely SSO-A is launching a giant space diamond in the name of art...

It's also launching a Elysium space burial satellite, with a bunch of people's ashes on board.

Now that one I had heard about, kinda creepy tho. Sooner or later that will reenter, uncontrolled, and we’ll all be breathing vaporized dead people. Pretty sure there’s a zombie movie that started out like that. :/

OTOH, the ISS has been disposing of Space Poop this way for 20 years now, so...

Any news about the supposed hot-fire test which should have happened yesterday?

The 45th is predicting a good 60% probability of launch safety violation for Tuesday.

We still are at 89 hours from the launch.

Yeah, but, not like... dead people from space...

There's Columbia. And this burial company has done one mission before (it failed). But, another company, Celestis, have done several space burials, suborbital, orbital, and even lunar orbit IIRC. So you've been breathing dead people for a while.

As I said, they seem to be making every amateur mistake in the book.

Similar to how many people...interpret NASA statements to sound like Orion can go to Mars on its lonesome.

Plus their selection process includes no serious physical prep, and has died at the Skype call stage.

Purely theoretically they could be selecting people now for a mission ten years down the line, assuming they want incredibly elite tailor-trained specialists, but that’s now what their plan looks like.
