SpaceX Discussion Thread

NSF thread now updated to say it is not at the site leased by SpaceX, but at "Coastal Steel"

Which is literally next door.

SpaceX address is an empty lot.

SpaceX has applied for road closures at Boca Chica for May 28/29.

Looks like we can expect Raptor soon.

We're gonna get a bunch of people to Mars just in case anything ever hits Earth...

... and then the biggest asteroid in the solar system is gonna take out Mars.

At least we still have the Earth. Unless Mars breaks and sends a big chungk at us.

Or we can start building O'Neill colonies in space, using NEO's as source of materials.

On the one hand it's a very enticing idea. Plenty of living space in one package! But on the other hand, it comes at a cost - basically you are losing an escape boat in case anything happens. Of course you can land two Spaceships next to each other - then convert one into base core, keeping the other untouched.

It sorta makes sense, since Starship already has life support, power generation, etc.  Turning big fuel tanks into habitable space isn't exactly a new idea, either.

I would assume he was talking about a crew version. 1000m3 is a lot of habitable volume.

Starship would make a great wet workshop, though. If projections show that a crewed Starship can do TLI and landing with no refueling (DearMoon), then a full on tanker version (fuel tanks in the nose cone) *may* be able to do a one way landing with no payload. In addition, you can strip down the landing legs as they don't need to actuate or be landed upon in more than 1/6g gravity.

Then you could wet workshop the whole thing, but you'd still need to get the life support there, so it may not be that good of an idea.
