Perhaps he wasn't joking about that nuclear pulse drive ...

Seriously though, I assume they removed the engine to have it thouroughly checked for stress fractures and the like.

Have they even done a full duration test-fire of Raptor on the test stand yet?

Maybe they’re adding equipment for inflight re-ignition?

Raptor uses an augmented spark igniter. It can restart whenever it wants, as many times as it wants, as long as it has electricity and props.

They haven't done a full-duration test fire of Raptor but they fired the last one continuously on the test stand for a few minutes, I believe.

Was looking at the SpaceX page, decided we needed this image:

A few people on Reddit have started calling the first "orbital" starship the Stardiver/StarDiver, as it will presumably test the skydiver re-entry pattern.

That pic makes me feel like I'm playing KSP with an extreme graphics mod.

That never gets old.  I'm so excited for tonight that I may just hang out after work instead of rushing home to miss as little as possible.

FH is apparently a little behind schedule, so it might be launching towards the end of the window, instead of the beginning.

Oh, rats, I thought it was supposed to be 6:30 *am*, and got all excited to watch the stream.

I mean, I'm still excited to watch it tonight, but ...

Wait, I just had an idea- maybe the interstage is white on this FH because the shielding is more expensive and they aren't confident enough in the core stage to spend extra in it yet. Maybe if it lands, we'll see a black interstage on STP-2.

Just a thought.

Isn't black the normal color of the interstage? IIRC it is carbon fiber. They paint it for aesthetics and stopped doing it on B5. I don't think that the white adds much extra protection. Maybe Elon decided that FH looked better with a white interstage?

Utility >> looks. I’m sure there’s a reason why they painted the interstage this time. May have something to with extra hot reentry.

Either they began construction of this core before they stopped painting the interstage (early b5), or they painted this one with ablative paint.
