Slim.

The trick is that they only have a mission duration of 14 days, and presumably if the lander is on the side, they have to attempt comms from an angle where the antenna works (~180 degrees). No idea what on the side means, either, it might have been fairly kerbal, it was heading down with about equal horizontal and vertical velocity at the time they lost comms (something on the order of 150 kph at an angle).

if the antenna is at the wrong angle it may be worth trying to command it to tip itself up from an orbiting probe flying at an angle if it cannot be contacted from the earth
