"Catastrophic failure" good joke, i planned this :-)

I always get little bit laugh when i intentionally put my Munar probe into collision course with Mun, or when i intentionally de-orbit my old satellites and make them burn up in upper Kerbin Atmosphere  get "Catastrophic Failure" description on mission report, it was not "catastrophic" but "planned" failure

I've always been slightly annoyed by this tbh.. it wasn't a failure! It was a totally successful mission!

It also makes me wish impact probes were more built into the game... like an actual science part designed for lovely explosions :)

Happens to me too. Whenever i fly my prison vessel to crash with Duna. Its not that bad.

This post raises so many questions in my mind lol.

I'm pretty sure they aren't grading the quality of your mission, just stating that the craft has had an equipment failure that was catastrophic in nature. I get your joke though. :D

There is at least one mod which does impact science

I know. I'm saying it'd be nice if the stock game had a basic impact science feature. Could be done with one extra part and it could provide new contracts for those of us that use them.

It's not the part, it's the fact that it needs coding to support it.  I agree, there are lots of little things which would be nice in stock.  But, everyone has their own opinion as to what should be added to stock

I'm testing a two stage Laythe return vehicle for Alternis Kerbol. "We want our Kerbonauts to come home safe, so we're testing this vehicle by dropping it into Jool" reads the ship description. Since it had enough fuel to lift off from Kerbin and enter Jool via a Laythe gravity assist, I consider it a capable vessel of returning three Kerbals to Kerbin from Laythe's surface, and thus the test was successful.

Then again, maybe "catastrophic failure" doesn't mean a bad thing to Kerbals.

Oh I appreciate that :) I just don't envisage it being a particularly massive undertaking to do :)

It's actually harder than you think. Lots of things to think about such as distance from the strip. What happens if a probe gets outside of physics range? That's one of the many questions and problems that would have to be solved to code this properly.
