SSTO Base Challenge:

Recommended Posts

The SSTO Base Challenge:

The SSTO base challenge is a challenge in which you will need to make a manned MK3 plane SSTO, and have a 2.5m permanent land base as cargo; And return the SSTO back to Kerbin safely! The ship can cost up to 150,000:funds: (including base) , and the base has to be over 5 tonnes. The SSTO can only have RAPIERS or Nuke engines (or any for Eve); you are allowed to drop fuel tanks in cargo bay. The Base has to have at least 1 antenna, 2 docking ports and 3 solar panels. This is a fun challenge. You are allowed to use mods such as KWRocketry, TweakScale, and KER.

Easy: 4 kerbals to Duna.
Medium: 5 kerbals to Laythe.
Hard: 7 kerbals to Dres.
IMPOSSIBLE: 15 kerbals to Eve.

EXTRA: Land the SSTO at runway

Uhh... I believe Eve is the "impossible" one

can i launch separate vehicles and dock in LKO?   Yes

i can leave them in a permanent base?  Yes, that is what the challenge is based on.

Plane type, yes.

make the rules clear. or I will make my attemp with a SSTO spaceplane not much different than that one:

welll, jokes appart: Land Base or Orbital Base? Other than space for crew what else the base need to have (docking port, probecore, genarators,...)? The vessel need to be single stage to orbit or to destination? its allowed to carry the base in an external cargo pod?  How about refuelling?

Hah!

If what you wanted was "Deliver a base to Laythe with a single-stage spaceplane's cargo bay" you should have just said so from the start instead of adding all the arbitrary details at the end.

Adding to this.  People taking a challenge want to know the rules beforehand AND that those rules are sensible.

If the challenge is to "delivery a land base to [destination]  and return to Kerbin without losing parts"  the destination Eve is not only hard,  but out of limits. (well,  except if ludicrous overpowered mods are allowed). And Laythe is also a much more convenient destination for a spaceplane than an Dres,  even if the payload is double the size. Actually for the same payload Laythe is by far the easiest destination if you know a thing or two about gravity assists.

Bingo.

I had already built a lovely VTOL rocket SSTO with a gigantic cargo bay and a nuclear-powered transfer vehicle...made it to Jool and was toying around with Tylo capture assists for Laythe insertion.

@Spricigo, There we go, updated!

Sorry, but that is not enough to me.

More relevant to your challenge:

What are we trying to do?

You can tell a poorly thought out challenge from a mile away, if the first few posts are asking for details, you have done something wrong.

Make sure you explain your challenge properly so players know what they are supposed to be doing.

This satisfies the challenge as originally defined, though obviously not with all the many add-ons since:

Spoiler

screenshot0.png

This is my SSTO, replete with chutes for landing because that's easier than propulsive landing.

screenshot1.png

Really high thrust so I'm starting mid-gravity-turn.

screenshot2.png

Blast off! Each core has twelve Vectors and a single Dart.

screenshot4.png

Rapidly supersonic.

screenshot5.png

Exoatmospheric apoapsis...now I'll just be fighting to get the nose down.

screenshot6.png

Cut off 30 of the vectors to take advantage of the higher ISP of the Dart.

screenshot7.png

Circularizing.

screenshot9.png

Single stage to orbit: achieved!

screenshot10.png

Cargo bay open.

screenshot11.png

Payload deployment in 3, 2, 1...

screenshot12.png

Deployed!

screenshot14.png

Payload clear; flipping.

screenshot16.png

Retroburn.

screenshot17.png

This should be a good periapsis.

screenshot18.png

Inflating aft heat shields.

screenshot20.png

This was...very hot.

screenshot21.png

The heat shields helped a lot, though.

screenshot23.png

Through the heating.

screenshot24.png

My drogues can go now.

screenshot26.png

All chutes popped!

screenshot27.png

Burning off some velocity to try and keep it the chutes from breaking.

screenshot29.png

Down safely!

screenshot30.png

Now, back to my payload.

screenshot31.png

Planning the intercept.

screenshot32.png

Lined up.

screenshot35.png

Burning!

screenshot37.png

This will actually take a couple of passes.

screenshot39.png

Slow going.

screenshot41.png

Watching my drop tanks carefully.

screenshot43.png

Drop tanks expended.

screenshot45.png

Drop tanks away!

screenshot47.png

Transfer insertion complete.

screenshot49.png

A respectable amount of fuel remaining.

screenshot51.png

Refining periapsis.

screenshot52.png

That should be close enough!

screenshot53.png

Long transit.

screenshot54.png

This might get hot so I'll just burn-capture rather than trying to set up an aerocapture.

screenshot55.png

Raising orbit to be on the safe side.

screenshot56.png

Burning for capture.

screenshot58.png

Captured!

screenshot61.png

Setting up an aerobraking flyby.

screenshot63.png

Nice and tight.

screenshot64.png

Brought my periapsis up above the atmosphere and then I'll just burn retrograde until I hit air.

screenshot65.png

Retroburn has lowered significantly.

screenshot68.png

This will be nice and hot.

screenshot69.png

Still burning.

screenshot70.png

Legs out for maximum braking.

screenshot73.png

Getting hot!

screenshot74.png

Getting very hot. Not gonna lie; I had to quicksave a LOT here.

screenshot75.png

Will it burn? That is the question.

screenshot77.png

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

screenshot79.png

Still not captured.

screenshot80.png

Capture!

screenshot81.png

Can't believe I made it.

screenshot82.png

This will splash down, I'm sure.

screenshot83.png

Still burning hard.

screenshot85.png

Through the worst of the heating, though.

screenshot87.png

Yay!

screenshot88.png

Nice shot of Jool.

screenshot89.png

Burnout.

screenshot90.png

Transfer stage jettison.

screenshot91.png

First set of chutes out.

screenshot93.png

Rest of my chutes out.

screenshot94.png

Dropping, dropping...

screenshot95.png

Splashdown!

screenshot97.png'

Technically a base!

Of course now they're never coming back, so....

MISSION FAILED!

1. It says Horizontal, Mk3 Plane SSTO

2. You have to return the ssto to kerbin (not base).

READING COMPREHENSION FAILED!

1. It says "challenge as originally defined"; you originally said SSTO and only later added the completely different requirements of HTOL.

2. I did return the SSTO to Kerbin. The base is on Laythe. What else do you think I did?
