Win10 on my dual-booting Laptop. Quad Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.6Ghz (3.5Ghz turbo), 8Gb and GTX-950m 2Gb.

Now why KSP on the Win10 partition? A few reasons:

- DirectX is more efficient than OpenGL and Nvidia drivers more current and easier to update (without something breaking...).

- Didn't want to clutter up my Ubuntu 16.04 partition with non-work related things, Steam in particular.

- My OS partitions are rather small - well the Win10 partition is was quite roomy until VS2017 with Xamarin and Android emulators got installed - whereas my Data partition (NTFS and shared between the two OSes) is rather big - having games on that made sense, and quite uncomplicated under Win10.

I'm not a fanboi of the one over the other. I find Win10 works very well for gaming and some specialist tools, and you can't beat Linux for dev work. Just as long as it isn't Mac or Consoles (same thing really), I'm good :)

Quite similar to my situation.

Except that beside my Win10 gaming/funbox I use a dualboot Win10/Ubuntu for work.

(Ubuntu is nice for dev work, but not optimal for dev work when the target platform is pure windows  ).

The only experience I've had with Windows 10 is my mother's laptop, which is brand new, but runs at supercooled molasses speed. The task manager reports that the OS alone takes up most of her RAM, but it could just be a lemon.

I recently removed KSP from my linux partition.  It (and Steam) was taking up too much room (and I nearly always play KSP on Windows), as Linux is really, really small (I think I once crammed it into 16G of an SSD.  It has at least 48G of SSD now, but Steam was hitting using up a partition).  There were also plenty of visual issues (the floor/background of the VAB was the main one).

I've estimated that getting half the pixel rate in Linux is the best I've seen (either lost half your framerate or half your resolution), but everything else happens on Linux (which means I really can't test anything for the forums, I'm in Linux and haven't bothered to port my password manager to Windows).

  • 4 weeks later...

Ubuntu 17.04/MATE on i5 [email protected], 24GB, GTX-1060/6G

Switched last week from Win 7/64 to Linux, so had not much time for gaming, but first tests with mods seem very promising. Wanted to get rid of M$ as all the professional Software I use (Blender, Krita, Substance Painter etc) are available as Linux versions.

I'm curious as to what issues these might be,  I've been running on 10 for over a year now, and other than having to upgrade a couple drivers (which is completely understandable), I have had 0 issues.

Now I understand when a specific machine has issues with 10, like I said, if the manufacturer of a part never updates drivers.   Or if the machine is a controller for a piece of shop machinery, and the old software won't run on the new OS, I can see someone having an issue with being forced to update.

Having never encountered any issues before with 10, could somebody please enlighten me to systemic failures associated with W10?  And remember, the plural of anecdote is not data.

black screen of death after install, half installed and scrambled, are the common ones I've seen. my favorite is the empty start menu,

Gentoo Linux ~amd64, kernel 4.10.17 (upgrading to 4.12 while I write this) with XFCE 4.can'tremember.

  • It supports my GPU (RX 480 8GB, factory overclock) and weird motherboard (4x Socket G34, only half-populated due to me breaking a CPU while trying to remove it from the plastic shipping tray) with minimal effort
  • Installing the libraries needed to make KSP work is fairly painless (vs. other distros wanting to pull in the entire universe as cascading dependencies).
  • Transparent ZFS compression reduces load times, deduplication keeps actual disk use from spiraling out of control, and snapshots mean not having to go digging through backup media when something goes minorly wrong.
  • Almost a decade of familiarity with the distro and its ways of doing things
  • unionfs-fuse simplifies mod management (no more rolling back to the previous filesystem snapshot after careless flailing-about in CKAN breaks a beloved save)
  • Linux also used to be the only platform with a (mostly-)working 64-bit build of KSP, which allowed the "mod it 'til it crashes" play style to scale much further than on then-contemporary Windows builds.
  • I no longer trust Windows enough to allow it unrestricted bare-metal access

I also occasionally test stuff on Windows 7 and Mac OS, mostly for mod ideas that end up dying in the trackless wastes of cross-platform packaging while attempting to make native-code dependencies work.
