Russian Launch and Mission Thread

Never go full Varyag!

You might just go AWOL in Greece, like the CEO of Roscosmos’s electronics branch has. Nothing to do with an audit of his company, of course.

Bart Hendrickx has published something Russia’s premier space li-oin battery and solar panels manufacturer didn’t think should be published - namely a complete list of their projects apparently posted on an open cloud service. Now the guy is all over the news.

Anyone wants to catch some FSB malware over on his link?

So it looks like the Trampoline Man himself is going to show up at my university with a lecture about how he’s going to fix Roscosmos.

I might attend. Don’t think he’ll take any questions, though. But on the off chance he will, I’m going to ask a tough one :D

With “no end in sight” to fraud in Roscosmos (actual quote from top investigator), billions being funneled out, aging Soviet-era technologies, terrible pay and working conditions, top execs fleeing to other countries, notoriously bad quality control, future rockets that are already strictly inferior to foreign competitors and record-breaking failure rate on existing rockets - why do you think that this train wreck of a space agency can be fixed?

(Well, maybe in a bit milder terms. Maybe.)

Do you want to end up packed into the “snacks” bin on the next mission to Eve Venus? Because that’s how you end up packed into the “snacks” bin on the next mission to Eve Venus. :o

"Here, in KSP, we build the rockets in the barn. From scrap, from scratch. Do they?"

Counter argument: Elon Musk builds his new rockets in the field without even a barn.

Ok, found a free seat. There’s more press and TV crews here than students, lol

SWDUTg5.jpg

Thales Alenia Space director is also here.

36.4% of Roscosmos income is from non-budget sources.

91 sats currently in orbit. “Sfera” LEO constellation is very important. New Glonass sats without imported components are to be launched in 2020.

RD-180 is the best engine. RD-120 also very good. RD-171MV for moon rocket is ready for test fire.

Current rockets:

QqLFEIr.jpg

Angara-A5 launch this year. Up to 8 A5 launches every year from 2024.

Very important to take the launch market back from SpaceX.

”Sarmat” heavy ICBM tests successful.

51% of all tram cars in Russia are made by Roscosmos from metal scraps from building rockets.

Most of the money is not in launch market, but in sat building and operation market.

Roscosmos will participate in “Smart city” and car autopilot programs (with sfera sats?).

Autopiloted Roscosmos tram cars:

ukj2zBp.jpg

“Canopus” sats helped with locating wildfires and unsanctioned logging.

Future priorities:

Recent launch failures because of human factor. Tech is good, humans are unreliable.

Getting rid of non-core assets. Except tram cars.

New Roscosmos bank will help stop rampant corruption and thefts.

Can no longer sell Proton launches for 100 million because of SpaceX. Their pricing is dumping, anti-competitive and only aims to kick Roscosmos out of launch market.

Will consolidate all research institutions into one science center.

Vostochny is vital. Will eventually move all launches there. Launch pad for Angara A5 currently under construction. Launch pad for super heavy rocket next.

Nice animations.

fVjPlW8.jpg

Future rockets:

zAkk5CI.jpg

Methane/LOX rocket (SPG), 9t to LEO

Angara-A5M, 27t to LEO from Vostochny

Angara-A5V with hydrolox upper stage, 37t to LEO. Moon tugs and stuff will launch on this one.

Reusable “Federation” spacecraft for moon missions.

Super Heavy (STK-1 and 2) kerbal-style rockets, up to 140t to LEO. Moon missions. NET 2028.

Luna-25 lander in 2021 to south pole. Luna-Glob lander to test soft landing, also 2021.

2022 first “Federation” launch. 2023 launch to ISS.

Many lunar sats to test various stuff for manned missions during 2021-2027.

2025 sample return. 2026-2028 unmanned “Federation” launches to the Moon. Will also send anthropomorphic robots with motion capture control.

2029-30 manned flights to lunar orbit. Aim to deliver foreign payloads to the Moon too.

2030 manned Moon landing. Base construction starting the same year.

Luna-25 almost done. ExoMars lander “kazackok”. Rogozin wanted to name it “novichok”, but decided not to (lol).

”Bion” lander with animals to far side of moon  (no ETA). Venus probe (also no ETA).

“Fedor” avatar robots:

Odf2DjN.jpg

These will work in dangerous environments, e.g. outside ISS. Fine motor control is good enough to draw paintings.

oHhHWyd.jpg

New national space center in Moscow to be completed in 2022 for 50,000 employees. Angara production plant will be nearby. “Technopark” territory where international partners and space-related university departments can have their buildings.

That’s it. There was much more, but I could only write this fast.

Question about strategic mission of Roscosmos. Answer - expansion of Russian influence in solar system and creation of high-tech jobs.

Question about corruption. How to deal with it. Answer - Rogozin was appointed director to end corruption. He started the investigations, they’re very productive. Media coverage not helpful and often misleading. Roscosmos is fighting corruption more than other state corporations. Most of subordinate directors replaced in 2019.

Question about Falcon 9 and Angara. F9 launches for Pentagon are 3 times more expensive than commercial, hence dumping. Angara will be competitive even with F9.

Question, is space political? Definitely yes. Relationship with NASA is remarkably good despite sanctions, but US Senate unhelpful.

Question, how to deal with media attacks. Every failure is overblown in media, compared to other state corporations. Will have to just keep working despite the media. Space is hard. Promises new Roscosmos that we won’t recognize.

Question, does Roscosmos need political scientists. Answer: he is afraid of political scientists. But seriously, they do.

Heavily criticizes American lunar program for constantly switching goals and dates. He thinks that it’s a political battleground between Trump admin, Democrats and Republicans in various state institutions.

Question, will Russia participate in LOP-G? Answer: new American plans to land on the Moon in 2024 make LOP-G pointless. Focus on our own programs. ISS is much more important. New ISS modules. Waiting for Americans to decide on their plans.

Stupid question about Elon Musk meme.

SpaceX is a good challenger, competition is ultimately good.

Will work with S7 space to launch Soyuz-5 from Sea Launch, increases payload to 23-25t to LEO.

Just got a new colleague who interned at TsNIIMash. He says there's more "snack packers" than rocket scientists there now.

Are the animals going to return, or this is Phase #1 of terraforming?

P.S.
The Soviet tortoises were the first beings from the Earth near the Moon. They should finish the unfinished.

Given how long they live, it could even be the same turtles. :D

But it needs to be done right this time. They’ll need four tiny elephants a piece, and some discs...

That would explain a lot...

Roscosmos has seemed like they weren't happy with their role in Gateway for a while now. I wonder if this was just the excuse they were waiting for so they could do it without offending NASA (who they want to preserve a good relationship with).

They’d have to alter their ponderous production plans. Hopefully they’ll manage to launch Nauka in the next decade.

TKS lived, TKS lives, TKS will live.

P.S.
We may laugh, but almost all post-Vostok Soviet/Russian space viable not Buran achievements are just 50 shades of Proton.
All lunar and interplanetary crafts, all orbital stations and modules. Lifted by Proton, made from Proton's parts. Also, UR-200 a little.
Since 1960s till 2060s?
