In case you haven't had your fill of politics, does anyone remember Ajax, the Soviet Skylon equivalent making extensive use of MHD and plasma shenanigans?

Well, I have good news and bad news. Good news is apparently the person still trying to make it work had enough legit info to warrant a treason charge. Bad news is... treason charge.

That's chilling.

Odd, too. B/C if recent history teaches anything, wealthy and highly placed people are usually untouchable.  He must have really p. O'd the wrong person.

It's hardly new, nor was he particularly highly-placed. I count at least two more cases of FSB coming down on scientists that were caught halfway between the civilian world and the world of military hypersonics.

And that's not including Rogozin's aide:

Since the charge is usually that they were a bit too loose-lipped in international scientific exchanges (or, in case with Safronov, he was a reporter), yes, chilling.

In which Rogozin baselessly defames a US astronaut and releases previously undisclosed medical information about them to cover for Roscosmos's ground side screw up and also deflect from the issues with Nauka:

Seriously.

I hope the astronaut in question sues him.

They merely made that three-year-old narrative "official" - as official as it gets when citing an anonymous sauce. It's a leap to think Rogozin is the only person in Roscosmos who's sufficiently bone-headed and tribalistic to... *checks article* merely regurgitate the party line while occasionally lashing out at critics.

Besides, who's Rogozin and the rest of Roscosmos are going to believe: their own people who repeatedly tell them a manufacturer screw-up is physically impossible, or Americans?

The NASA instruction "Take a drill" appeared to be too ambiguous.

The shocked crew asked : "Do you want to run a drilling in Soyuz?"

"Yes", said NASA.

They meant an evacuation drill on board of Soyuz....

The English language is so joking...

TL/DR: Idiots shouldn’t run a space program.

Rogozin should'a stayed in military procurement. He's a good fit for Konashenkov.

But Roscosmos's problems predate him.

1. Decouple the military half of Roscosmos and give it to the military. They can keep Rogozin as a space commander or whatever.

2. Privatize the civilian half if there’s anything of value left. Leave Roscosmos to only distribute fix-price government contracts for civilian and science launches.

In a source which I feel squeamish to link, I read an expanded explanation of the thesis, which matches the early official hypothesis of Roscosmos.

Some time ago in US segment the life support system got down for a while, so the crew had to use diapers for everything.

At some moment one crew person (the name is told, but skipped here) got so mad about it that decided to make the ground control return several persons to the Earth and be one of them as sick, even being from another ship crew.
To do that, this person tried to make a tiny hole in a non-critical compartment of docked Soyuz to force them deorbit it sooner than planned (with three persons onboard).

You'd then have to split TsENKI in half, take a solid chunk of the sat manufacturers with you... basically, you'd just end up with all of Roscosmos inside Rostech, and some dysfunctional quasi-private company with zero capabilities.

No, commercializing FKA as Roscosmos is how we got into this mess to begin with.

Without strong commercial sat and rocket manufacturers, there’s only stagnation and fall into irrelevance due to mismanagement and underfunding. Ok fine, put the entire Roscosmos back into the military (to tap into the military budgets), but then there should be a separate agency that orders launches and payloads on a competitive basis from Roscosmos-linked or private firms. Subsidise the sector if it’s unprofitable at first. Some oligarchs might get interested.

Pointless redundancy. There aren't enough resources to spread thin on two launch providers.

Roscosmos just needs whipping into shape and a boatload of money, and the military will be willing to provide it if you care the entire establishment with Starship-launched Rods from God obliterating the silo farms and mobile launchers.

Seriously, these comments were beyond inflammatory. Grossly misogynistic and baseless.

NASA has pinpointed the exact time the leak started and can account for the locations of their astronauts before and after that time, nowhere near the Russian modules. This information has been shared with Roscosmos.

And the idea that *anyone* could run a drill on the station without anyone noticing and without getting metal shavings everywhere is patently ridiculous.

At low speed, with multiple fans permanently on, why not. Aluminium is soft.

That's why it's important to equip any good in the shop and after with a RFID label to trace its position.

That's easily dismissed. This is why Roscosmos at the time insisted on searching for material evidence, and afterwards on, effectively, being able to interrogate each astronaut.

Distrust works both ways.

And now in multiple radically different news:
