Rocket Garden getting a new exhibit, the last unfinished Delta II!

Wooohooo!!! Can't wait for it!

Bruno's answered it will be a 7420, but it's already awesome to have one real legendary Delta II conserved somewhere.

Why are Delta II first stages painted teal? I've always noticed how this color is pretty much unique for a rocket.

It was the primer colour that they used to paint over with white. To save weight they stopped painting them white and the blue primer colour became a distinguishing feature that they kept.

Okay, field report time.

Did manage to make it to the public viewing area, along with a record smashing crowd. The bleachers were designed for ~250 people, and they were overflowing. (Personally, I'd estimate that up to 10% of the spectators were, in fact, watching their cubesats launch. Lots of UCLA and ELFIN shirts and sweaters.) PAO reps from the 30th Space Wing said they'd never seen a turnout like this for any Delta II flight out of Vandenberg, ever.

View from the bleachers was spectacular, though the ascent was not visible for long due to the low cloud deck. We got maybe five seconds before it vanished into the clouds, though I did briefly spot the bright exhaust plumes through the clouds about 20ish seconds into flight.

I will freely admit that there were tears in my eyes as she lifted off, though the ones in my right eye may well have been because I had been looking through a monocular as the SRB exhaust plumes cleared the hills between me and pad. They're quite bright when you have gotten your eyes night adjusted. :P

All in all, well worth the trip. Absolutely will do it again, and hopefully with clearer skies next time.

Also,  bumped into another Kerbalnaut there taking pics. Hopefully they share. (Hint hint, nudge nudge.;))
