Galileo Exploration Challenge

This challenge is inspired by Scott Manley, and emboldened by @marcushouse, @Thrimm, and @Matt Lowne. This objective is simply stated, but hardly trivial:

Challenge Objective:  Plant a flag on all planets/moons that can be landed upon in the Ciro/Grannus binary system. For an extra challenge, you can install Research Bodies, and the Outer Planets mod.

Rules:

This challenge is quite an undertaking and dependent upon many mods (as you'll see) just to attempt, let alone actually accomplish. So I will keep things fairly open and lay out these general guidelines:

  • this is a career play through.
  • no use of in-game cheats or HyperEdit please
  • difficulty and other conditions are up to you.
  • while there will be some required mods, obviously, there won't really be any real restrictions other than listed above, unless/until an exploit is found
  • I reserved the right to modify these rules to keep things fun and fair
  • a flag must be planted on every planet and moon that is capable of doing so in your modded playthrough to complete the challenge
  • some form of proof will be required, (screenshots, video, etc) and mission reports are highly encouraged
  • a badge will be made available upon completion, (once I finish making it) but there are a bunch of great flags already here

Recommend install:   List of mods I have installed and a link to the CKAN file

Ranking

This will be calculated by time taken overall in seconds, divided by the total of each body landed and flag planted upon. This will be further divided in half if you used any form of life support. Then once again halved if your installed Research Bodies. I highly recommend installing Tarser Space Tech, or it will take years complete research, thus the ranking modifier. Lowest score wins and tops the leader board. Any ongoing attempts will be listed and updated when progression is submitted. I will attempt to keep and running tally :)

Gael and Kerbin have the same day/year cycle. 6 hours per day and 426 days per year. So as and example:

  • time taken overall = 5y 302d 3h 42m  =  (5x920160) + (302x2160) + (3x3600) + (42x60) = 5266440 seconds
  • 5266440 seconds/ 24 flags planted  = 219435
  • 219435/ 2 for using USI life support = 109718 final total score

Special thanks to @Galileo without which this challenge would be impossible. His tireless efforts bring so many of us great newfound joy in something we love. He is a credit to this community. Thank you so very much.

That's a long modlist, but I have many of them in my Gallileo install. Count me in.

Can I continue my career save for this? I already have Flags on Iota, Ceti and Niven.

Forget that, it's about timing.

Welcome @Physics Student

I made this challenge in the hopes that I could wrangle in those that may have already started a Galileo career. The scope of the challenge is so big that I don't think it matters much if you've not traveled outside of Gael's SOI, or even like me had made it several inner planets. Like all other challenges, proof can be faked and the honor system is in place. I started over because I couldn't get my save to workfrom 1.2.2 to 1.3. I would never MAKE someone start over unless it was obvious that they were trying to pull something :) Maybe we can rope in a few others like @Jetski or @5thHorseman?

I'm on hiatus right now, and a general Kerbal vacation, so will have to bow out.

Edit

That's a crazy modlist. I don't think I've ever had that many installed at a time. Does sound like my kind of thing though! :)

Aaaah, the modlist scared me!

But this seems like something to try.

It works on my POS system :) but is pushing limits. You don't have to install everything I did. I am pushing myself as well. I would think a fresh install of KSP 1.3 with Galileo Planet Pack and it's dependencies would suffice. I devised the ranking to benefit those willing to go the extra lightyear   Simply accomplishing this at all is going to be a feat, let alone doing more for recognition!

Episode 3 is uploading

Different microphone :) Let me know if, like I, you think it is better.

Video summary:
Contacts on launchpad done for funds. Telescope orbit altered for contract. Iota lander and relay sent. 3 biomes landed and contract completed. Lots of science acquired. Observatory and R&D upgraded. 4th tier science cleared. Gael radar and biome scans completed. Rescue sent with all veterans. New Gaelan named Crisys :)  Grabbing the Advanced Exploration node grants me access to MPL.

Episode 4 is uploading :)

Summary: Lander sent to Ceti, getting 5 biomes before returning the data core for 1162 science. Buildings upgraded and science spent. Iota program  set as strategy and manned lander sent with all Gaelans aboard. Landed on Iota and planted many flags. Ceti program set as strategy and mission renamed and diverted to Ceti. Landed on Ceti and planted flags.  Just enough fuel left to orbit. Sent remotely operated rescue tug. Got vessel to 70km orbit above Gael and then deorbited and landed safely. 497 science this time,  everyone to level 2, and a ton of badges received.

Episode 5 is uploading :)

Summary:  New celestial bodies discovered with the telescope and science acquired for it. First interplanetary transfers planned. Launched MPL Station to get ALL the science!! Took station to Iota orbit, then Ceti landings in 5 biomes and planting flags,  before finally escaping Gael briefly. Scientists both now level 3. Several more celestial bodies discovered with the telescope, and over 1500 science gained. Research started on Thalia and Tellumo in the observatory. 5th tier science cleared in R&D.

Episode 6 is uploading :)

Summary:  Niven Lander sent. Much science processed and returned from MPL and spent in R&D.  Landed MPL in 5 Iota biomes, collecting science/data to process. Planted flags on Ceti. Sent rescue mission to return stranded Gaelan. Debris recovered and new recruit Jullite returned to Gael. Sentinel telescope sent to orbit Ciro. Landed rover on Niven and completed strategy contract.

Episode 7 is uploading, clocking in over an hour.... I appreciate ANYONE willing to watch!

Summary:  Maybe this episode should have been split, but it all just goes together thematically.

Niven program strategy taken. Other Niven contracts accepted to do a fly-by, plant a flag, surface science, and return to Gael. Rescue missions add Kimrys, Sanissa, Lismie and Chuck Gaelan to the roster. MPL farmed over and over for science and transmitted to GSC. This allows me to purchase the rest of the 7th tier on the tech tree.  Multiple tourism contracts allowed me to test out life support, escape pods, nuclear power,  and mining operations. First Sentinel asteroid mapping satellite deployed. All GSC buildings upgraded. Gearing up to plant my first interplanetary flag!
