[WIP] "Serenity"

Boogaman

Recommended Posts

This is my first time making a mod of any sort. Programming isn't my specialty so this mod is going to be my own little experiment. I'm not sure what the optimal polygon count is for a Kerbal mod so right now Serenity is only 1,371 polygons. If the game can run this mesh fine, I may add more detail to it. I obviously have yet to texture her but here is what I have so far. Critiques are welcome!

Absolutely! I'll be honest this task is daunting to me so if the code starts to push me away, I will gladly make this model available to the community so someone else could do as they wish with it. There was a Normandy mod that looked beautiful but sadly ended up not being finished. If it gets to the point where my knowledge of coding can't get it working, I'll let someone else use the assets. After all, I've seen people asking for Serenity for a while.

Anywho, side image, as requested.

Take me out to the black

Tell 'em I ain't comin' back

Burn the land and boil the sea

You can't take the sky from me...

She could use much more polygons. Really. Those... things around the tail are way too angular. 1.3K polies is virtually nothing for KSP; 3K per single part would still run O.K.

BTW I guess she will not go as a single part? A pod, a hinge (x2), side engine (x2 too), a hull (is Kaylee there? :o) with fuel tank... and, apparently, ASAS (otherwise she's not flyable when VTOLing). An entire set might have up to 20K polygons.

Waitin' for release! ^_^

UPD. Feel free to consult me on coding (preferably in PM). I want this bird flying.

A lower amount will get a larger audience, because not everybody runs on high end computers.
*sighs* If you only knew on what computer I've got my "3K-per-part" rule... It's a dinosaur well below KSP's minimal system requirements :P

To reiterate once again: maximum load goes from physics (i.e. part count; e.g. my rig doesn't handle 50-part ships well); next is the texture size (some shaders are really heavy; I've managed to freeze the game to slideshow with a simple cube with wrong shader), and poly count is the last thing to be concerned about (for example, 7K parts made no noticeable impact on in-game performance).

Yeah, that's the only thing that kinda sticks out at me. They do have a bit of an angle on them, but I'm not a modder so I dunno if that's easy to fix or not. Also, I imagine the textures my make the angular part less noticeable? I did notice there's a little bit missing off the top part of the tail, you can see it here -> http://www.imgbase.info/images/safe-wallpapers/tv_movies/serenity/7081_serenity_sci-fi.jpg

Otherwise I think it looks excellent!

I thoroughly appreciate that, Tosh. In fact, after hours of fiddling with the KSP Unity Package, I may ask a few questions. However, I'm still a ways away.

I'm going to be adding more geometry to the mesh today as she really could use more detail to define her. I'll post some new pictures by the end of the day.

So her polygon count is a bit beefier but still well under 20k polygons. She's 9,732 polys right now and unless there are any blaring errors I've made that you folks point out, I'm going to head right on into texturing.

WOOT

That's Firefly-class at its best))

I'd suggest teaching 'er to fly before texturing. You may need to split 'er into several parts, which may require changing UV maps.

Very true! In fact, I decided to do a quick test just to make sure I could get a cockpit into KSP. This is the mod in its infancy but there is something fulfilling about seeing this...

  • 3 weeks later...

A reason? It's a Sci-Fi Western. It's funny. It has lovable characters. The soundtrack is awesome. You could find worse ways to waste your time.

Don't be put off by the battle scene at the beginning of the pilot... Let's just say it shows that it wasn't a very costly production.

The semester just recently started up so I haven't had as much time to work on it unfortunately. I'm currently trying to figure out how to place nodes in the appropriate locations. My estimated release date is somewhere around November.

Between the semester and the show I'm in, I don't have a whole lot of time to work on it. However, if someone knows how to assemble the nodes correctly, I'd be more than glad to hand them my mesh so it could get release earlier.

Trust me, I want to see this bird fly too :)
