Indeed, the spark is better than the terrier (in terms of DV) till you go above FLT800+capsule.  If TWR is no issue, then it's a darn good caveman engine (say if you want to do Gilly, or Ike).

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this craft under control?  It pitches west without input at about 40 m/s, and I cannot get it to do anything but flip over.

Same feedback as your other thread - the raw text of the craft file is not easy to diagnose.  Take a screenshot of the whole vehicle in VAB or pad (in daylight!), upload to imgur or image host of your choice, paste [image].jpg here

I assumed that someone would take the craft data I posted and, using notepad, copy/paste it and then have the actual craft file to import into KSP to see the actual ship itself.  But, as requested, a screen shot from the VAB...with COM, COL, and COA all shown.

Right, the problem is lack of control authority.  The reaction wheel power in the probe core is quite low, less than a tenth of the Mk1 command pod.  Since we almost always end up with the non-gimballing Reliant as a stage 1 lifter, and since the available steerable fins are rather too large and heavy, reaction wheels end up as the most efficient option a lot of the time.  Slap a 0.625m reaction wheel on the probe core (same 5 torques as the command pod) and you should be good to go.

If you don’t have that yet, you’re going to need gimballing engines for the first stage.  A pair of Thuds will do.  Not as efficient, but the power is just right. Might help to turn down the gimbal amount to 2/3 or 1/2.  Then the Terrier’s gimbal an take care of you in the upper atmosphere.  Once in space, even the weak probe core reaction wheels are enough (but you need some patience as they’re still slow).

So, 3 things.

  1. I only have access to the Small Inline Reaction Wheel, which I added.  Had to then remove the second FL-T400 tank as that put me over weight, but I was able to add an FL-T200 and an FL-T100, hoping that this amount of fuel allows me to get into Munar orbit and back.  I'm going to aim for my transfer to put me on the front side of the Mun when I get sucked into its gravity so I can use your advice about Ap being on the trailing side right off the bat.  I am, by the way, in LKO with the probe now.
  2. I learned something today, thanks to you.  Probe Core + Reaction Wheels = far better control.  I wondered before what the reaction wheels were for, but in all other games I was just launching Kerbals; I never had the need to do probes until the Caveman challenge.  I love learning new stuff - thanks!
  3. This explains why Venture (my fledgling space station) pitched west upon launch.  I may need to actually terminate the station and re-launch to get that puppy into the correct inclination and (mostly) equatorial orbit.

And now I've got a brand new problem with the probe:  I cannot control it once I get to the Mun.  None of the control inputs work.  I have a pair of solar panels on the thing, and one of them currently has 0.46 sun exposure with 0.182 energy flow.  The battery on the probe has a charge of 10.0.  So if I have power, why can I not control this thing?

My guess is it's on the far side of Mum and therefore can't talk to the KSC.

Or the default antenna isn't strong enough to reach Kerbin but I thought it could from Mun.

The probe is actually between Kerbin and the Mun, and this is happening prior to reaching Ap during transfer.  I thought it might be the antenna as well, but I'm not seeing anything when right-clicking that says the default antenna isn't strong enough or has no power.  Which is why I posted; I was wondering if there was something else I wasn't accounting for with this that people knew about.

Well, time to fire up the pre-launch save, edit the craft to have a bigger antenna, and see if that works!

Yep, it was the antenna.  Unfortunately, the probe exploded upon trying to come home.  It reached the upper atmosphere and, even with a heat shield, overheated.  So, question:  if I wanted to set a Pe where the probe comes in, slows down a bit, and then cycles through its Kerbin orbit a couple times, where should I start the Pe?  And do I need to adjust Pe every time I hit Ap?  What's the best method to get this done?

You might have been better off keeping the large tank, and just use the slider to reduce how much fuel/oxidiser it carries, until you come up under weight.  That way you only have the overhead mass of just one tank's materials and connectors, instead of two, meaning you should be able to squeeze a bit more fuel on board than you would have using the two smaller tanks.

Antenna signal strength and connections are displayed in the upper left, near the time acceleration display. It pays to take the time to learn what the symbols mean.. but mousing over them will tell you what you need to know.

I'd try a Pe of around 50-55km, and see how it goes. You should not need to adjust for each go-around. Unless, of course, it becomes apparent that you are going to end up making a dozen or more passes before you get slowed down enough. Also, a design note for future reference.. it just so happens that engines like the terrier can also do double duty as a heat shield on re-entry. That's all I use when returning from Minmus (with much higher re-entry speeds) with my crewed Minmus lander.

I thought about doing that with the engine, but I still have fuel left when coming back in.  If that fuel tank overheats on re-entry with fuel in it...boom.  I am going to try setting an initial Pe of 55km, attempting to circularize (roughly) the Ap upon each go-round to burn some fuel.  And to slow down.  Hopefully this method will help me get back to the ground safe-ish.  Thanks for the help!

Now that the 1.11 update is available, I'm curious what the clan thinks of the new EVA construction mode and how "compatible" it is with Caveman?

My initial feeling after a short testing session is that it will be a nice addition that will spur further creativity and fun design patterns (which there is already plenty of in this thread :)).

  • The largest container available at Caveman tech levels is the SEQ-3 that can fit at most an Oscar fuel tank.
  • It seems most useful for adding small science, batteries, antennas, solar panels, ladders and whatnot to craft after launch where part count, rather than mass is the limiting factor
  • Construction in orbit would require an engineer to ride a ladder to space, so not hugely more advantageous than assembling multi-craft with docking ports.

I think it should be allowed 100%

The only restriction I could see being worth it is enforcing the 18 ton limit on the surface of Kerbin,

I also think the challenge needs a reboot so there's a clear "pre 1.11" and "post 1.11" leaderboard.

There is a larger container available: the Hitchhiker.  Going to be tricky to launch a 2.5m part in caveman, but it has a lot of container volume.  I was thinking of replacing external Baguettes to refurbish late-cave crewed Mun landers...

There is mass savings by deleting jetpack and personal parachute (useless except for ladder riders).  There is part count savings when full RCS arrays are needed, with 2 5-way parts instead of the usual 4 4-way parts, plus the new small RCS is a lot lighter

EVA propellant is now infinite, a kerbal on a ladder can store and retrieve it to refill without ever boarding.  This is a big change for interplanetary missions!  And kerbals landing and returning on Minmus from orbit via jetpack - this will probably become routine now

I'm thinking a tall rover/crane could bring an engineer to command pod height on the pad to install small bits and bobs, significantly easing the part count limit and slightly easing the mass limit

I think orbital stations are a lot more appealing now as a place to keep things and build/rebuild craft.  Ladder ride to 80km orbit is a lot simpler than to Minmus or Mun. Though a Minmus flats junk station could be interesting...

EVA science is cute, but I think it's just once per surface, plus space-low and space-high? Haven't checked yet.  It's not a lot, not going to be a game-changer.

Two bugs I found: with existing games, you have to go to R&D to "discover" the jetpack and parachute on the start node, which could come as a surprise.  And due to some change in the HG-5, I had to unlock it again at the cost of 1500 kerbucks.

The Hitchhiker is tough.  It’s a real struggle just to make 80km orbit with a perfect ascent.  Gotta use the heavy structural adaptors for drag, and even then  I was flaming out during circularization.  Forget about taking it anywhere; target craft and engineers will have to come to it.  So we’re looking at either lawn or orbital assembly to bring its dead mass somewhere with just three baguettes (its max cargo payload). It’s obviously far cheaper just to carry the three baguettes directly,  No, I think carrying stored parts as cargo is a dead end for the Cave.  And generally too - the mass and size limitations are pretty strict.  Can’t move much mass at all on Kerbin.  But there’s still a lot of potential in orbital refinement (remove empty tanks, add full ones, add landing legs to a bare lander, swap Terrier for Spark etc)

During re-entry, you should be firing the engine as a braking burn, which will both slow you down further, and get rid of that nasty, 'splodey fuel. It's a win/win.

So, still working on re-entry of the probe.  I'm still coming in too hot, and I'm still blowing up.  My last attempt saw me mostly circularize my orbit, but I overcorrected and ended up with a far lower Pe than I wanted.  I'm aiming to get at about 71km before starting to enter the atmosphere, but I have fat fingers at times.

I'll be back at this on Monday, and I will hopefully get this down.  Once I do that I'll be aiming for an orbit of Minmus...followed by an attempt at a Mun landing.  If my math is right, I will be at about 9/10 nodes after Minmus, which might make the Munar landing unnecessary as I could finish off with a few biome trips on Kerbin.  I will finish this challenge!

I think one of the things that make the Caveman challenge such a success is the simplicity of the rules, basically:

  • No building upgrades of any kind
  • Just raw primal KSP with the ever present danger of the sabre-toothed Kraken

To encourage innovation I would make 2 suggestions:

  1. Explicitly allow EVA construction to inspire creativity and add to the established repertoire of lawn-assembly and orbital assembly.
  2. Bring the Breaking Ground and Making History DLCs in from the cold (so to speak) in a unified leaderboard. Some of the possibilities this could unlock:
  • Hinges, pistons and servos from Breaking Ground would allow the creation of cranes and other advanced construction equipment to take lawn assembly to the next level
  • Caveman prop planes and helicopters! Using the propellers and duct fans could allow such things as electric powered Duna or Eve biome hoppers.

Hello, I just wanted to say thank you for creating this challenge and promoting this idea. Whilst I don't think I could ever formally enter I have had a lot of fun starting a new career and restricting upgrades to facilities, namely restricting the runway, launch pad, vab and sph. It gave me a new level of respect for all of you who have actually completed this challenge without upgrading anything!

 

Just constraining yourself to 18 tons and 30 parts really forces some creativity! I've been trying to work on a design for lifting the maximum fuel to LKO that fits in this category and doesn't need extra fuel before take off. My best effort is getting just over 120 liquid / 150 ox to approx 100km LKO. Did anyone else do something similar to this? I ended up launching a under fueled research station, fueling it up before launch and am now gradually building a bigger fuel station in orbit using these little guys.

Taking the advice about using multiple-gravity-assisted passes, I was able to get Explorer III from Kerbin, to Munar orbit, and back home.  I expended every last drop of fuel that I took with me, but that's only because I'm rather inefficient in setting trajectories in space.  I did my transfer burn from Kerbin to the Mun at the wrong spot, which would have ended up with the probe crashing into the surface of the Mun once caught in its SOI had I not done a prograde burn to correct that.  I also overburned on my Mun escape trajectory, causing the probe to have way too high of an initial Pe (in the 3.5 million meter range).  But hey, that's part of the learning curve of this challenge, right?  Right!

Anyhow, earned a boatload of science.  Or, well, enough to get me not only 1 R&D node, but halfway to another.  Picked up Aerodynamics so I can maybe mess with planes and helicopters a bit, but a look at what's available for parts in each node showed me that I won't be using any of the parts in any of them until after this challenge is over.  I mean, why would I use heavier parts?  Either way, I'm now at 6/10 in the last tier for this challenge, and I'm about to do a run to Minmus to collect some of that sweet, sweet science.  I'll continue to use Explorer III for deeper space adventures; I like the design, it flies right, and I know what to do when returning.

Speaking of returning, I started this flight at Year 1, Day 21, 4 Hours and 16 minutes.  Current time after landing is Year 1, Day 25, 4 hours and 54 minutes.  The entire time for the flight, from Kerbin to Mun to Mun orbit to escape to Kerbin to landing was 2 days, 0 hours, 38 minutes.  I don't know what the norm would be here, but I don't think that's too shabby.

And now I'm off to look at contracts and see about hitting Minmus.  I'm also going to scrap the Venture project for now; I need to re-launch that with a reaction wheel so it's in the correct orbital trajectory.

I think you are well on your way to completing this challenge!  You are already, by your own words, limiting upgrades to buildings and doing things within the challenge parameters.  You should just go for it on the challenge!

So I was able to get to Minmus.  Took some finagling, but I did it.  And in doing so I realized that the solar panels need to be moved or I run out of power and boom!  Fiery death!  I crashed hard into Kerbin due to running out of power.

Tomorrow I will have to drop one antenna (I have two of them right now), move the solar panels, and add a battery.  Should have enough power then so I don't lose control on the way back.  &)

So I made one last attempt to get to Minmus without having to scrap the current flight...and succeeded!  My problem yesterday was (mostly) due to my being impatient.  I kept using the time warp function to get places quickly, and then I'd overshoot and have to correct, rinse and repeat.  This caused me to be unnecessarily burning through electric charge.  So today I went to Minmus, and I still used the time warp function, but I went slower (if you catch me) so I could slow down and stop the time warp before I needed to, which then allowed me to do correct burns and such.  Landed without a problem back on Kerbin after orbiting Minmus, and I picked up a lot of science points.  I am now at 8/10 in Tier V, with only Heavy Rocketry and Space Exploration to go.  And I've got 22 science points remaining, so I now only need 158.0 science points to finish off the challenge.

I'm thinking of attempting a landing on the Mun...or shooting a probe off to the Sun and see if I can bring it back.  I'm not sure if the landing will generate enough to finish this off, but I'm pretty sure the Sun fly-by would be.  The big things with either of these are:

  1. Part count for the landing.  I'm at 30/30 already, but I probably spare a couple of parts to at least get 3 legs on a lander (one of the antenna, one of the solar panels, combine the FL-T200 and FL-T100 into a FL-T400 and just decrease the overall amount of fuel to get under the weight).
  2. I'm still a bit shaky on doing maneuvers without nodes.  I am great hitting the Mun, I'm ok with hitting Minmus...and I haven't even tried anything beyond that with nodes in other career games.

Again, not sure which way I'll go.  But I am so close to the finish line!  And an image of Explorer III in orbit of Minmus!

So I was going to attempt a Mun landing today, primarily because I figured it would get me enough science to finish off this challenge.  But, because my flying is atrocious, I can't somehow seem to do it.  I can get into orbit, and I can get to the Mun, and I can orbit the Mun.  But I just don't have enough fuel to land.  Or, rather, my flying is bad and I am wasting fuel and need to figure out what I'm doing wrong.  :)

Anyhow, I took on a couple of contracts, and then did some science gathering in high orbit of Minmus.  And I gathered enough to unlock Space Exploration, and I have 29.8 science remaining.  This means I need 60.2 science points TO FINISH THIS CHALLENGE!  That's right - I merely need to get up to 90 to unlock Heavy Rocketry, and I'm done!  I can see the finish line!  I can taste the sweetness!  I can feel the scratchiness of the signature badge on my skin!  Erm...well...um...

Not sure how to best get that last 60, though.  Gonna have to take on some contracts, and I've pretty much exhausted the science on and around Kerbal and the Mun.  I may try a high orbit of the Mun to see how that goes.  Or, I could take the SC-9001 into orbit, collect science with it, and then transmit the results (jettisoning the junior before re-entry).  Doesn't matter, though; I'm going to finish this, and more than likely by tomorrow!

I'm done!  I finished the challenge this morning!  I kept thinking I had to do a Mun landing, but when I did science gathering in high and low orbits of Minmus, I thought back to my troubles with the science junior.  I scrapped getting science from that because it kept exploding upon impact when returning to Kerbin.  And then, for some mysterious reason that eludes me, I kept thinking about how someone here pointed out that they used their upper stage Terrier as a heat shield during re-entry, as well as burning fuel during re-entry to slow themselves down.  So I spent some time this morning reconfiguring the Explorer IV rocket, adding the SC-9001 in the upper stage, and I added several small radiator panels on top of the SC-9001 so it wouldn't overheat during re-entry (another issue I faced earlier).  Did a test run to go high Mun and gather science, aerobraked effectively, and landed on Kerbin with the entire upper stage intact!  50.0 science points gained, so I launched a second time, this time staying in high Kerbin orbit, and landed with the entire upper stage intact!  Another 37.5 science points gained, which put me way over the top for what I needed!

I cannot say how happy I am to have finished this challenge.  I know I need someone to validate this and let me know where to pick up the applicable badge, so I call upon the 2 people I am aware of that are running this - @Mr. Peabody (former/current) and @JAFO (taking over for 1.11).  Please take a look at what I've done and let me know if I have done this within the applicable parameters.  To help you along in validating, I actually put together a document that lists out all craft, to include part list, time and date of launch, science points gathered, and what I spent them on.  The document is on Google Docs, and anyone who clicks the below link should be able to view it:

I would like to point out that this was done with zero Administration contracts.  I did not enter the Admin building at all.

That should do it for the document and the images.  If anything is needed from me on this before full validation can be done, I would be more than happy to provide whatever it is you need.  I also realize that it's the holidays, and the 2 people I've tagged above may not be here this weekend.  That's ok; I can certainly wait until next week to claim the badge that I shall display proudly in my signature.

One last thing before I submit this post.  I would be ashamed of myself if I did not give a special shout-out to @fourfa for the help he provided with this.  He explained a lot of things to me on getting into orbit and how to build craft, and he did so on a level I understood.  I never felt like he was talking down to me or that he was irritated with helping; he is a credit to this community, and I would be so lucky to be as humble and patient as he is.  Thank you, my friend; I could not have done this without you!
