Spectroscopy thread

A while back, messing around with Celestia, an idea I used for creating rings for planets... be it fictitious systems or for newly found planets where the body 'might' have a ring system... was taking the spectrum of the parent star and using it to create the ring banding pattern.

Celestia reference on the subject.

Nice pics. How did you get them exactly.

I have been working in and around spectroscopy for 2 decades now. Fundamental research, inorganic chemistry.

I made public labs cell phone spectrometer, taped it to a phone, aimed at a light source, and snapped away!

@dundun92 What are these off ? Fluorescent lights ?

The first three are CFL (compact fluorescent) Next is mercury vapor streetlight, then sodium vapor.

Many of the sodium lines gives it away I guess.

But yeah, because LED and incandescent are unatractive XD

Also, those are a bit "false" because of RGB camera. Actual spectrograph use pure black-white CCDs. You can sort of "see" it on the sodium lamps, it's not as strong as it's often described (unless it's a "white" one).

LEDs and Incandescents are booring! I know, but color looks so much better!
