The zoom/lighting effects come from a combination of Scatterer and Camera Tools. The image of all six planes is an unedited screenshot - I just put it in stationary camera mode, zoomed in, and moved the camera until I got an angle I liked. If you're asking about the titles with the name of the craft, I edited the image in paint.net.

Thanks, I should clarify... Do you use an image overlay software as "tracing paper" when you're building your 1:1 models in the SPH/VAB? Or are you just insanely good at eyeballing & measuring? If you use overlays, what software do you use for that? I'd have an easier time getting proportions of my crafts right if I didn't have to tab back and forth between my reference schematics and my crafts while building them. I tried OVERLAY2 and it hasn't been able to mask over KSP's window, so I'm looking for alternatives.

And are you aware of any good mods that make it easy to measure distances and part angles in the SPH/VAB aside from EditorExtensionsRedux?

That makes more sense in hindsight...

I don't actually use overlays at all. I've used them in the past (I would take a screenshot with Kronal Vessel Viewer, then composite the overlay on top of it), but have stopped doing that since 1.4 came out. I'll outline my build process for you and anyone else who is curious, using my F-35 as an example.

My build process starts with searching for pictures and the craft I'm building, looking for different angles and making note of all the details that I want to capture. For the F-35, the lower fuselage is quite distinct so I wanted to make sure I could get it right.

Once I know what I'm building, I make sure I have the critical components working. For the F-35, that meant making the engine transition as smoothly as possible.

For craft without moving parts, I'll start building, beginning with the most distinctive part of the craft. Here, I started with the tail assembly and the engine. Around this stage, I frame out the entire craft, using i-beams and cubic octagonals. This is the only stage where I am switching back and forth between reference images (a single 3-view is all I need, typically). I make sure that the frame has the same dimensions as the real craft in this stage as well. Getting the shape down is actually much easier with I-beams, since you're basically just drawing an outline. Angles are the tricky part for me, having wing pieces just distracts from the goal.

This is the frame I built for the F-35. Compare with the F-22's frame

zCN7fXW.png

Now that I have the frame, I begin working to fill it in. This involves occasional references to images to get shapes right , but for the most part, all the hard work was done in getting the frame right.

As the parts are completed, I remove the frame and make whatever minor adjustments I need to get it to fit the dimensions exactly. As for measuring exactly, I do almost everything by eye. If it looks to you like it does in the photos, it's probably pretty close to what it is in real life. When absolutely necessary, I use cubic octagonals to make a meterstick and measure based on that.

An now for something completely different...

The Canadair Regional Jet is an extremely common sight among regional airlines and at small airports, so I gave it the tribute it deserves!

Fully operational flaps, spoilers, thrust reversers, and the like, has an accurate cruising speed and flight time, and close to accurate passenger capacity.

Two-parter today, because I didn't bump this thread earlier: Dassault Mirage and Boeing-Saab T-X

EtFB1r6.jpg

This craft is a lean 71 parts, but you'd never know it looking at it: https://kerbalx.com/servo/Dassault-Mirage-2000

Be the first to get your hands on the first KSP T-X - or don't. It'll probably be in service for another fifty years anyway: https://kerbalx.com/servo/Boeing-Saab-T-X

Have to say this... Space Shuttle

I'm one step ahead of you -

O5rJe7c.png

This is taking significantly more testing time than just about any other craft that I've made, undergoing a major revision and countless minor ones. I'm currently trying to get the glideslope up to the point that it can land successfully and making the doors more consistent.

Once those challenges are ironed out, my plan is to release it as my 100th craft on KerbalX (I'm at 96 as of the T-X I posted earlier today).

How many parts?

The orbiter is ~550 parts, and the whole stack is ~725 parts. My XPS 13 runs it at about 1/4 speed during launch, which makes testing it quite the ordeal.

It's a beauty, though. Well worth the trouble. Now featuring the STS-1 White EFT!

Other updates - I was had a nice eclipse over KSC, so I took my F-100 out for a noon-midnight flight.

Craft #97 has been declassified - the Yakolev Yak-38 Forger, a Soviet VTOL carrier-based fighter.

Greetings from the early 1940's! Kelly Johnson sends his regards in the form of quite possibly the weirdest fighter concept ever - the Lockheed L-133 Starjet.

I mean, just look at that silhouette.

That's not to mention the fact that it's incredibly maneuverable and at a very reasonable part count!

Two new craft are in the OP! I didn't push the STS upload because that got its own thread:

Here's the video of the STS again (I'm proud of it, if you haven't guessed). Give it a watch and enjoy the music:

Not to be outdone, I decided to remaster (which later meant a complete rebuild) my old A-10. I had built one with a working GAU-8 and one at 1:1 scale, so I decided to combine them into the ultimate Warthog.

This Panavia Tornado has been keeping me busy recently, but it's one of the best aircraft I've put out in a while (In my honest and totally unbiased opinion)

PlS3sh8.jpg

The looks took a lot of inspiration from @EvenFlow's excellent work, but were combined with a set of variable geometry wings painstakingly built by yours truly. @HB Stratos helped last-minute to tune this craft and ensure that it's up to his high standards for Tornado replicas.

Jk2mcQB.jpg

The swing wings on this craft were an absolute pain to get right, but I'm so glad I put in the time. In addition to being extremely reliable, they're also near-indestructible. If I can swing the wings in an 8g sustained maneuver, they're going to work whenever you need them to.

Pick it up here, it won't disappoint: https://kerbalx.com/servo/Panavia-Tornado

I've got a bit of a triple feature coming up here (well, more of a two-and-a-half-le feature)

There's some black magic afoot... The Voodoo is here!

F-101C (fighter/interceptor): https://kerbalx.com/servo/F-101C-Voodoo

RF-101C (reconnaissance variant): https://kerbalx.com/servo/RF-101C-Voodoo

And an earlier craft that didn't merit a thread bump: the Grumman F11F Tiger

Download for the Tiger: https://kerbalx.com/servo/Grumman-F11F-Tiger

My to do list is pretty empty at the moment, so I'm open to suggestions for my next challenge. I've been meaning to go after another swing wing, especially after the Tornado turned out as well as it did.

I don't think you've done a B1-B bomber yet have you? That would be fun to see in KSP at 1:1 with working swing wings.....

The B-1B was actually my first swing wing, released late January two years ago. It looked good for its time, and worked well (the top speed was abysmal, though), but its one of several that I've been wanting to come back to for a while.

I've been talking with @HB Stratos for a while about finally getting organized and collaborating on one, so this might be the spur we needed to actually get going.

Say hello to Convair's Mach 2 penetration bomber - the B-58 Hustler

0TWKYb1.jpg

I've been coming back to this one because I just wasn't happy with engine designs, but I finally hit something that I'm happy with, coupled with extreme performance and a modest part count.

Just be careful setting it down (target 3m/s vertical speed) on landing.
