What if someone takes Making history expansion DLC and turns it into a mod?

Recommended Posts

If the paid DLC is large & complicated and already tested, then what motivation would there be to put a vast amount of effort in to duplicate it for no reward, other than bloody-mindedness? if you want to go down that route, why not duplicate the base game for free? Unity engine is there for everyone already.

The real issue:  every feature in the DLC is available with free mods, though you'd need several mods to re-create the functionality.

That may be true, but...

Official DLC will not neccesarily work the same way or have the same features or functionality as any given mod, even if it essentially does the same thing.

Because the DLC is Squad originated it could be better integrated to the game code, so potentially work more efficiently.

Because it is a 'commercial' product, like the basic game, Squad have a vested interest in its quality and keeping it compatible with new versions of KSP.  General 'bugs, glitches and anomalies' are not as acceptable in commercial software as 'hobby produced' mods (and rightly so), as they risk a reputation hit and resulting lost sales.  I'm not suggesting modders don't care, the time they dedicate to them shows that they very obviously do, but they have no obligation or financial incentive to keep things up to date or fix bugs.

Nothing against mods, but just because a feature is available as one does not  mean that there is no point in Squad doing something similar either as part of the base game or DLC.  I would argue that if it's a popular mod then it is exactly the type of thing Squad should consider doing, as there is an obvious interest in it.
