Impact Probes

Recommended Posts

Impact probes would simply be small metal probe cores with the unique advantage that they could survive in immensely high pressures and very hard impacts. They would include a range of basic scientific instruments (i.e thermometer, gravioli, seismometer, barometer) plus a built-in antenna and perhaps some unique ones to make them more worthwhile, and be unlocked towards the very end of the tree. They could be used for landing on a planet without the need for a soft landing, at the expense that their functionality would be limited to a select few scientific instruments, and you wouldn't be able to (nor would you want to) attach anything else to it except the rocket itself.

Then you may just have the stuff you cannot attach to it in a octagonal strut behind it. So not really a meaningful limitation.

In any case how much is "immensely high pressures and very hard impacts"? The scientific instruments will be actual parts or built-in experiments?

It seems to be a viable idea for a mod, but need some balancing.(IMHO)

While the idea of impactor probes is good, the whole plot of an impactor is to... impact things, and not quite surviving. I'd prefer a "stockification" of Impact! rather than a new, rather situational probe core. By what miracle any probe could survive an impact to Tylo, anyway (we're talking about slamming into a rock at mach 4 or 5 at the very least)
