World Firsts?

So, when I've watched others play KSP, I've occasionally seen them get world firsts, like first orbit of Duna, First Mun landing, etc. However, I've never gotten one of these. Is this normal? Is it a contract? How do I make them appear? (And I do play in career).

They don't just pop up in the middle of the screen by themselves.  They appear as notifications on the same button at the edge of the screen that you use to see contract completions.  When the notification button has a green dot on it, click it and you'll page through all that you have.  World's First will be in there with the contracts.

It doesn't work for me. Did I accidentally disable them or something? I can see contracts, but no world firsts, and I've never seen them there before.

Strange.  I have no explanation.

For clarity, the world first indicator look like this in the top right of your screen:  (happened to just earn one)

The very first 4 contracts you get in a career game are all World's Firsts. How can you even start the game without seeing them?
