The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge Continued

Recommended Posts

I’m doing a kerbalism grand tour, which is far harder and I have no time, but I have a kerbalx craft with light modification that can easily do it. I give you permission to fly it in a joint collab, we won’t likely go on the leather board but as a gate crasher. Search up the user

and download Kraken’s maw.

Shower thought:
I bet deploying a 100 kerbal base on each moon would wreck the competition. Sadly, the mere tylo lander would have to shuttle 42 tons up and down several times. I wager it will be really hard. The mothership might be 10 kilotons or more.

Hmmmm. This looks easy. Im going to try it.

I think that's the first time I've heard a Jool 5 described as easy:D

Good luck!

5. Kerbals must be in a pod or cabin (no seats) for the interplanetary journey. Seats are okay for landing and flying within the Jool system.
6. One refueling mission is allowed in the Jool system if you run out of fuel, unless your ship uses ISRU. The refueling mission can only transfer resources, not parts, to your Jool 5 craft. This mission must actually be flown!

does this mean that these rules have been revoked?

Alright, here's my submission to the Jool 5 challenge. (3rd level, no ISRU)

Ship used: The KSS-J "Orca", with a mass of 198.951t and a cost of 320,294, assembled in 7 launches for a total cost of 664,705
Crew: Jeb, Val, Bill, and Bob, plus the new hire Lanuki, known for being the only kerbal to return from Eve. (don't tell him he was meant to be disposable)

Mods:

Spoiler

Gameplay-altering mods:
Kopernicus + OPM; never visited the outer planets
  Navball Docking Alignment Indicator
  Trajectories
ReStock (changes some part sizes, most notably the Poodle)

Gameplay-affecting mods:
  BetterTimeWarpContinued
  Easy Vessel Switch
  Kerbal Alarm Clock
  ScienceAlert
  Tracking Station Evolved

plus visual mods

(no DLCs)

This was my third time ever visiting Jool, and I'd never actually orbited or landed on any of the moons before, so I'm surprised and pretty happy that I managed to make everything work my first time designing the craft. Of course, it did take far too many quicksaves to land sometimes, especially at Laythe.

(note: After taking admin strategies into account (40% science), my mission would've netted a total of 23458 science. If only I hadn't clipped a few of my science parts...)

I have a few questions; firstly, for the modded category, all mods except what is specifically prohibited are allowed, right? Just want to make sure. Secondly (I will probably sound very dumb for asking this), are you supposed to post your submission as a reply to this topic or as your own thread?

It looks like people have done both in the past; I've posted mine as a reply, some have made threads, some linked imgur albums, and some created entire videos and put them here.

Does KJR count as a prohibited mod since it technically alters the physics a little bit?

Kerbal Joint Reinforcement is fine, good luck!

Congratulations @AlpacaMall on completing the Jool 5 challenge on the 3rd level! I like how the Orca and its landers used a modular design. I found the Laythe lander module and the reusable stage to be my favorite two.  Both the design of the craft and the visuals of its blue-plume launch from Laythe were pure eyecandy, sleek, and awesome. I really cannot apologize enough for missing your submission, I will add you to the leaderboard immediately. Congratulations again on completing the Jool 5 Challenge!

@JacobJHC

Hi, this is my submission to this challenge.

Jool 5

The mission is also the last part of my Kerbollo challenge, that is I tried to comply with both the rule sets. I believe this should be a valid entry for the 3rd level.  Although I've actually  used an ISRU,

KSP version 1.8

Mods:

Chatterer

Kerbal Alarm Clock

Transfer window planner

DLCs:

Making History

Breaking ground

Congratulations @BeanThrusteron completing the Jool 5 challenge on the third level! I enjoyed the story you crafted around your mission, and must say your low-Tylo orbit refuel is not something I've seen done before. Additionally, I really like your plane's design. I'll add your submission to the leaderboard now, congratulations again!

For the low cost sub-challenge are multiple launches allowed? For example if I had two 10000 fund launches, would that be a total cost of 20000 funds? I'm planning to do this with the additional restriction that no launch can be above 10000 funds, so I'm planning to launch the Laythe and Tylo landers separately (among other things) and dock them in Kerbin orbit.

I too enjoyed this mission.  Well done, and well documented.  I hadn't thought of a) Kerpollo'ing the Jool 5 mission, b) refuelling via asteroid but this seems very sensible.   I also like that you increased the volume per kerbal.

Peace.

Yeah that's fine. Total cost would be sum of all launches

Wow, so proud of being in the leaderboard. Thank you for reviewing my mission, thanks for the extensive recap you wrote in the leaderboard and, most of all, thank you for your efforts at maintaining this challenge alive.

uhm, yes, I like roleplaying my missions a little bit. Kinda dollhouse for nerdy people, if you know what I mean.

Me too. I've got an insane passion for spaceplanes, and I liked this one so much that I had to get it back on Kerbin and land it at KSC.

Thank you. Actually, Kerbollo's rules forbid multiple launches and refuelling on bodies other than the intended mission destination(s). So, I though runsacking an asteroid for fuel a very convenient way to overcome these constraints.

Peace on you, too, bro.

I just finished my first ever Jool 5.  With the added twist that:

1. The craft travels from Kerbin to Tylo orbit as a single stage, then to laythe and back home as a single stage.

2. All parts are recovered on the runway at the end of the mission.

3. No isru, aero exploits, or abusive part clipping are used.

4. The transfer to and from Jool is direct, no assists.

5. And finally, it only uses 2 engines, one Rapier, and one Nerv.

This would qualify for Level 1, and I dont think it qualifies for any special accolades, as it is too heavy for low mass, too costly for low cost, and too partly for low part count.
