Getting to Other Planets

Recommended Posts

The best option is to wait for a transfer window. (A time when the positions of the home and target planet are perfectly aligned for an inter-planetary slingshot. Flybys can also be used, but will require a significantly higher skill level. I recommend using Olex's illustrated transfer window calculator for finding transfer windows.

For a stock solution you could place a test-planning probe into a solar orbit, just ahead (or behind) kerbin and with the same orbital period (426d 0h 32m 24.6s (or circular with AP & PE of 13,599,840,256m)), once in position you can use the probe's manoeuvre node to test for and see when transfers are coming up!

That's a great idea, I never thought to do that.

For Eve and Duna, there's an even better way. No need for a launch calculator there!

Kerbin-Duna: Wait until Kerbin's tangent (a straight line that "touches" Kerbin's orbit) points slightly in front of Duna's current position.

Duna-Kerbin: Wait until Kerbin is 90° behind Duna. From there you can adjust until you reach a kerbin encounter (+-correction/plane changes along the route)

Kerbin-Eve: Wait until Eve's tangent points slightly in front Kerbin's current position.

Eve-Kerbin: Wait until Eve's tangent points right at Kerbin.

Oh, and if you want to go from the Mun to Minmus, it's the same as Duna-Kerbin, only in the other direction: Minmus is 90° ahead of the Mun.
