For many years hemophilia was known as the "royal disease" because many of Queen Victoria's descendants were born with the genetically  inherited disease. Among those affected were Tsarevich Alexei of Russia and the Duke of Albany. Hemophilia was eventually present in the royal families of Spain, Prussia, Great Britain, and Russia.
