Overlaying a texture

Hi all,

I would like to add a stripe of colour to a stock part (an ore tank, the bracing around the middle chaned colour.  And then distribute it as a mod.

Firstly, if I copy and rename the stock.dds simply add the colour stripe using paint.net, then upload it as part of a mod for use in the Variant switcher, acknowledgement to Squad, is this legally allowed?

Secondly, is it possible to just overlay the strip over the top using the Variant switcher and avoid the issue?

I believe directly modifying the texture violates the license agreement.
