I'm very, very sad...

There are moments when I wish forty year old me could go back in time and tell fourteen year old me to pay more attention in class. Life doesn't work that way of course, but. . .maybe someone else is listening right now. Maybe they'll do better than I did. ;)

Our school watches everything we are doing using something they call "a special program"

LanSchool? I put my channel on 16001 (the highest channel and is unused) and I'm fine. It's just the blocking thing put in place. Can't use VPNs, they're all blocked. However, I have discovered that I can just switch my laptop connection to the 'Guest' network and that fixes it. That's why I'm writing this right now in Geography. Although the Guest network only has a 5 minute usage limit for a day, so I have to keep it short.

If I were a teacher, I'd announce at the beginning of the year that I have a 1-strike policy about electronic devices: students may use any electronic to help them do schoolwork in class. If they are caught using their electronics for any purpose not directly related to schoolwork (such as going on social media, listening to music, and yes, going on these forums), they may not use their electronics in my class for the rest of the year, and will have to hand write and hand-submit all of their assignments.

Draconian? Yeah, probably. Justified? Most certainly.

I know it feels like you're getting away with something Cat, but, maybe it's your education that's getting away from you. :)

Hello. I unfortunately discovered yesterday that the Kerbal Space Program Forums are now blocked at school. Luckily, this block only is from 8:30 am to 3pm (school hours), but it means that I will no longer be able to browse through memes during lunchtime or participate in debates and all that good stuff. So I will only be on very rarely (as I usually play Xbox when I get home), so just letting y'all know. ;.;

*Gasp!* Well, I globber for you. But seriously, I'm sorry.

Anyways; I'm not sure whether this is bad or not , however I do tend towards "not bad", since I can imagine the forums to be quite distracting. The forums are a great place, don't get me wrong, but they're not good while trying to focus on other, at that time more important, work.

Lol good catch. But I agree, when class is in, the student should be focused on the class.

If schools want to move towards e-learning, they need to bite the bullet and invest in E-desks: where (part of) the desktop itself is a computer screen. It would only connect to the school server, providing classroom content and tools. Then there is no need for any other devices and they can be banned.

That's how an honest and selfless teacher should do!  That's way to go, valiant sir!

While your more selfish and enterprising colleagues would allow everything, and then be making money on the overtime tutoring.

You would prepare your messages in a text editor, quickly connect, copy-paste-submit, save the page, disconnect, read the saved page.

I've never seen someone tutoring just to get ahead. I swear.

But yeah, the answer still lies in "no distractions". This forum is a distraction in classes unless said class is about KSP or something. No added point bringing it up in a class discussion about hydrologic modelling or controlled intersection (traffic light) setup.

A common thing when preparing to go to a university.
Additional self-education or tutors.

But I meant not that, but unofficial payed overtime personal classes with the same teacher to at least get good grades in the school.
If a child instead of classes wants to play, his parents will pay.

That exist even without the "restrictions". Highly popular down here.

But then you'd still have the same problem init. (but then whatever.)

Now, I'm homeschooled, and I only ever got a year of formal school, so I don't know what school is usually like, and I do agree that @The_Cat_In_Space should focus on the class, but if your school has a homeroom, cat_in_space, maybe use that for posting instead of posting during class. :)

I'm really surprised at how fast this topic blew up. Within a day it's nearly reaching it's 3rd page. I've [snip] had a few jokes (Especially the memes bit), and learnt that @Lo Var Lachland is homeschooled.

A student in school, sitting in class, is there to learn and gain an education... not to 'escape from reality'. There's plenty of time after school to have fun and escape reality.
Focus on the task at hand - school.
It's your life and your future that you're gambling with here.

Well that's why I usually go on the forums during my break times.

I wish we'd had internet when I was in school, would have saved me from having to sneak in those books into the boring useless classes.  Best thing I did was skip senior year of high school and go straight to college...highly recommended, in the meanwhile work around it  Banning it during lunch is especially stupid.  In my day had to fight to be able to bring a calculator to class.

It was not uncommon for me to have whatever book I was reading taken away.  I usually carried a spare (or two).

Just out of curiosity, humor me, and don't take it personally... allow me to make a point. Do you live in the USA? Do you attend a public school? If the answer is yes; Then stop wasting my tax dollars screwing around and playing games and hanging out in forums... or I'll pull my funding.  Using school supplied computers / tablets / internet access / etc for anything other than sanctioned activities is tantamount to "theft of public services" and is punishable by law (fines)... you being a minor, it's your parents who could take that hit. I wonder how they'd feel about that.

It's probably not a bad idea. Any lawyers here on the forums care to tackle that one?

Well, they're not just your tax dollars. Students can also contribute taxes to the government, mostly with sales tax, but also some income taxes. So it's not theft, especially if it's a sanctioned activity.

Also... you have little control of how your tax money is spent, and not paying taxes will likely result in you facing consequences.

Kids in high school with a job are not likely earning enough to file. College students are a different story, but managed smartly (being students) most all of their earnings can be written off as school / educational expenses.

I don't know what state you're from, but in NJ 'sales tax' goes into the state's general fund and is not used for school funding... supposedly. Some might argue that because, after all, the dollar is fungible. In NJ, public school funding has various contributing sources, including the Fed (whole set of rules for that), specific State ventures (such as gambling, the lottery, etc... ideally, originally, the reason for Atlantic City's casinos existence - to pick up that school funding burden), and primarily property taxes.

There is a whole big legal whoop-de-do over school funding here in NJ, the Abbott vs. Burke decision, a thing which I am very familiar with. Study that for a while and you'll see where the money is coming from, and whom it is going to. The level of graft and corruption is absolutely mind boggling.

As for the penalties I'd bring upon myself for attempting to withhold my share of funding?... Of course, but you get the point. ^_^

Edit:
Oh, and as far as theft - as has been stated and demonstrated here in this thread, it's not sanctioned activity... so there is no defense for it.

@LordFerret and @Bill Phil, if you're going to talk about how taxes are spent and laws regarding theft, please do it else where. Other kids say they need to go to the bathroom, go there, lock the stall, and then play Fortnite on their phones for the whole lesson.

Even if that were true: It doesn't make the situation better.

Or is murder okay when a lot of people do it?

Hi folks,

Quite a few posts had to be either redacted or pruned outright, due to a descent into name-calling and personal attacks.  We're all friends here (right?), and we all treat each other with respect (right?)... but then, you all already know that name-calling is not okay (right?), so I know I don't actually need to be mentioning all this.

Nothing wrong with lively debate, but do try to avoid leveling personal criticism at each other, okay?

Thank you for your understanding.
