Ch. 1: Disobeying Orders

"3... 2... 1... Liftoff!"

Tesla’s voice came over Catmund’s in-suit radio. She felt the G-forces pushing her into her seat as the rocket lifted off. As the G-forces subsided, she rested her hands on the controls. They didn't really do anything (as the autopilot did all of the flying) but it comforted her to hold the controls. She watched the fuel monitor as the outer tanks slowly drained their fuel. As they dropped, she heard an explosion. The autopilot started to freak out.

Tesla's voice came over the radio again. "Catmund, we order you to return to Kerbin. Repeat, you must return." Catmund sighed. "Requesting permission to keep going, Captain." A few seconds passed. "Permission denied, Lieutenant. Return immediately." Catmund looked at the fuel gauges. There was enough left to get to orbit. She turned off her radio. She would be doing this alone. She reset the autopilot and did her best to get some sleep.

Back at the KSC, Tesla sighed. He had tried to contact Catmund, but she had turned her radio off. He walked out of the control room and decided to go get some koffee. He would see what became of this. When Catmund returned, she would be demoted to a lowly ensign.

Ch. 2: Unbalanced Rocket

Having woken up from her nap, Catmund checked the fuel gauges. The second-last pair of tanks were about to drop, and then it would be (hopefully) smooth sailing all the way to orbit.

She waited for the stage to run out of fuel, and then listened to the satisfying sound of... Explosions? She checked the gauges. The stages had definitely separated, but one of her other engines had exploded! She radioed in to Joly and Shelfurt in the Science bay. "Joly, Shelfurt, we have had an explosion. Strap yourself in, there might be a few problems.

Only quick thinking kept the rocket going. Catmund seized control and stabilized the rocket, until the autopilot calibrated and took control. She sighed. This was a very, very, very bad day for rockets.
