KSP Challenge: Impact the Mun!

5:18. I made a mod with a custom engine based off of the SSME used as an engine. Specs were..... boosted.... (ISP of 9000, thrust of 5000 kN..... oh and mass reduced to 3.5 tons. you know simple stuff....)

I'll excuse myself now. This was purely for fun and I have no expectation for it to be actually entered/considered. If it does count though.... yay? I'll take that?

If you want a more reasonable unmodded entry...... I did make an actual non-modded launcher able to do it in 18 mins and 43 seconds. https://imgur.com/a/9bP4F0E

Wow... that was hard, but a lot of fun: not only getting something that would go fast enough, but also that didn't burn up on ascent, fall apart on staging (or just under acceleration) or go wobbling out of control and miss the Mun entirely.

Here's my time on unmodded 1.4.4:

At the top, minimal mass was the goal, using clusters of sepratrons on as little structure as possible.

Under that, a sort of vertical asparagus arrangement I thought should be called "fir tree" staging - but I guess it must have a name already.

And then... well, just MOAR engines and MOAR fuel tanks.  Extreme over-engineering at its worst.

Looks sorta like twisted candle staging. But not quite. Really not sure since on twisted candle, the number of engines per stage doesn't increase.....

Impact at 20m 37s on my first try, with a 5-stager...
Not too bad on the part count and now I know what I did wrong.
See you again after breakfast! ;)

4 hours later:
Too much breakfast... too heavy to beat previous time.

Could get trickier after this - 14min 59 sec. No mods. No clipping.

One Terrier on one Skiff on fifty-five Mammoths.

Well done and I don't wanna rain on your parade but a second faster might have been good.

I had a crack at this challenge this evening and managed to hit the Mun in 17 minutes 2 seconds from launch... but just noticed the challenge ended 3 days ago.

Oh well.

Some pics of the journey.

Don't tell me the challenge already finished. I just completed it in 14:29. I used only stock parts and KER. Aimed for about 5x TWR from start to finish.

I assumed it had, as it was a weekly challenge, started 9 days ago.

14:29... for a while I thought I had the quickest trip :)

A lot of times, if a challenge is popular, and it look like this one is, they'll extend it to two weeks, so more people have a chance to participate.

@Darth Badie Is this challenge going until next week?

Hmm. You'd need to average 10000 m/s in game to impact the mun (if I calculated correctly) on 20 minutes in game time. That's not impossible...... Difficult yes impossible not really.

I used to not know how to orbit, so to get into escape trajectory , I went 3.75 suborbital 'till I got to 30 whatever m/s. So it's just a hopskipjump to 10,000, right?

Um, nevermind. Just did some math, I'd need an insanely tiny lander/impactor and old KSP aerodynamics.
