Micro-challenges for all! (Continuation of Newbie Central.)

Anyone got screenshots of the new challenge? I'm wondering how it's possible on multiple fronts.

If you mean @Dark Lion 's rover jump challenge suggestion, it seems quite doable to me.

qxBvy.png

Note that Dark Lion didn't specify the direction for the jump. Doing it directly from the west is quite tricky, since the ramp is quite close to the building. But e.g. coming from the northeast and jumping over the pool first gives a much more practical trajectory. (Kind of hard to land on the parking lot for the platinum score that way, though.)

(Or I guess you could build your own ramp and place it wherever you want, although without a height limit on the ramp that makes the challenge kind of trivial.)

Vyznev got hops! Nice! I've been making my approach from the west... Actually feeling kinda dumb with my platinum-dubious edit.
I also didn't specify whether or not wings and 'chutes were allowed. No props OR sails would be tough though; I speak from over two hours of experience.

Just making a fun suggestion @SiriusRocketry, @The Minmus Derp ... It's not legitimately the challenge until the OP or team says so.

Sooooo sorry for the delay, I had like 5 prior commitments!  Anyway,

Challenge 2: Kerbin 3 circuit!

For our second challenge, we need you to land on the Mun and Minmus and return to Kerbin. This is a simple challenge, but not easy. Good luck to all!

Done :)

I hope you don't care about the order because in my opinion it is way easiert to reach the Mun from Minmus then the other way around, so I started my journey by heading for Minmus.

4 HOURS POST: So, I tried this myself for a few hours, with a few rovers. I managed to pull off every medal standard, save Platinum. I'm not sure if it's possible, but the rest are definitely possible.

Judging with this

Should be.

That totally counts as a kraken-drive and I did say no propulsion LOL

I mean.... It was exploitation of wheels physics, but in fairness, it was only rover wheels that propelled it.

...It is Year 61 of the Kerbal Space Age. A prototype of a new series of interplanetary ships, production index K-ET8909, is about to be launched for extensive testing in the Kerbin system. If mass built, those ships will open a new age of colonization of Duna and the moons of Jool.

On day 155, The Twin Moons Expedition sails to the stars at dawn.

Hello :)

Here is my attempt to KerbinGrandTour ! To complete this challenge I used Seraph spaceplane, my most advanced but never tested before cargo SSTO. It is rated at 30t. payload to Duna (on paper) so I figured it may be able to land on 2 moons and return.

This is what happenned :

Part 1 : Take-off, Mun injection, Mun landing

qynj9b.jpg

0w052x.jpg

tuoh9l.jpg

awx6fi.jpg

Spoiler

Take off stats :

qbekhl.jpg

Rocket mode ! 16 Rapiers and 2 Skiffs pushed the plane up to ~1850m/s before shut down, with Nukes finalizing circularization. You may notice that l/d ratio is quite high, because this plane is rated for Duna's atmosphere.

f25n1m.jpg

Mun injection :

n219cp.jpg

Mun landing, had to use a bit of Ox to light Skiffs and reduce velocity :

8kx0fb.jpg

Part 2 : Mun take-off, Minmus injection and landing

a358es.jpg

rr91jz.jpg

pwguxy.jpg

mbd9hx.jpg

Spoiler

Speeding after take off : as you saw on a screen above, I had a pretty good rebound which allowed me to pitch the ship very early. There is also a hidden Dart in the front cargobay facing downward that helps a lot on flat surface.

aggulh.jpg

Minmus injection using Kerbin fly by : this is actually quite easy to do because the orbital speed is so low around Minmus's orbit that you can almost wait for it during a whole week ! Also I launched at a bad timing because the change of plane occured really close to Kerbin and used a lot more fuel than on an optimum trajectory.

pt6d5k.jpg

Landing : no need to use rockets on Minmus !

ecw28u.jpg

Part 3 : Minmus take off, MSS and Kerbin's return !

k4cf7o.jpg

z45t7a.jpg

3fsk7r.jpg

287cep.jpg

Spoiler

Changing inclination to meet MSS (asdii1970 challenge) before circularizing :

an2ig7.jpg

Return maneuver : I used a mun fly-by and a correction maneuver to lower Kerbin's Pe and a more horizontal plane

0h2ta4.jpg

First aerobrake :

ml60df.jpg

Second aerobrake :

gov4up.jpg

Down to supersonic speed : I managed to pull 17+G with this plane without breaking xD

69k3lv.jpg

Fun fact : all the liquid fuel I brought "just in case" (3600units :o) was left unused ... >_<

I missed the deadline for the first challenge, so I resolved to get this one done in time. To make it a little bit more challenging, I tried to go for minimum launch mass. This is what I came up with:

2mpKpY8.png

This non-reusable spaceplane launch vehicle weighs 6.3 tonnes at launch (pilot mass not included). It's only controlled from the command seat, so you'll have to board a pilot before deploying the landing gears (or else it'll roll away :D).

Getting it off the runway is also a bit of a pain. After takeoff, I recommend throttling down to about 1/3 thrust until you're at least 10 km above sea level. Otherwise the Whiplash engine will just waste most of its fuel trying to push the craft to hypersonic speeds in the lower atmosphere.

Actually, it turns out that I had plenty of spare delta-v, and I probably didn't even really need the heat shield, so I'm sure I could've shaved off even more mass. Anyway, this was a fun mission to fly. Here's the craft file, if anyone else wants to give it a try. :)
