Real Life "Kerbalisms"

While T-14 Armata may look not so much Kerbal, but actually it is, and this makes me enjoy it kerbally.

Spoiler

Alabino110416-18.jpg

1. A crewless turret, like in BDArmory. No need in imagining a gunner inside.

2. A sensor mini-turret on top, like in some BDArmory turrets.

3. All crew inside the signle cabin. No need in moving them or have two different interiors for the hull and the turret.

4a. A toilet in the cabin. So, they can sit there endlessly, like the Kerbals do.

4b. But they still appreciate Snacks.

5. A flying drone can be launched from it. As well, we can do this in KSP.

6. The Weapon Manager placement is unknown but probably on the turret.

Scania Aerobus 1986. This one is from the hermanos from Argentina.

They essentially took a single aisle airliner cabin and shoved wheels on it. As we do on KSP!! :)

(Yep, there's a 14" CRT TV there , over what I think it's the "galley"!!)

(in pt-br, sorry)

Meanwhile I'm here cooing over the appearance of the Ka-26 family.

The entire rear two thirds of the fuselage are detachable in case of need for a cropdusting module or misbehaving passengers.

We know about drop tanks for planes.
PDlizwI9RRs2sox1dH1a_AEF29Jjz7B1_uGHhXT3

How about a disposable wing? A Hawker Hurricane(yes it's a bi-plane Hurricane), there you could drop the top wing.
Benefit is shorter takeoff and faster climb rate. You could then ditch the wing and you have an fast Hurricane. I assume you would keep the top wing unless you got into an fight, as I understand the wing had an parachute and was supposed to be reusable.

The Soviet also tried with this but made an bottom wing who could be folded up.

I don't have the slightest idea how in hell the pilot would see the runway on landing - but, again, 90% of my KSP airplanes have the same problem so….

Frigate upper stage.

(From the Lavochkin's bureau, the designer of Luna, Mars, and Venus crafts).

The flesh and blood of KSP.

1. Clipping parts?
Meh, watch it irl.
All tanks intersect each other in 3d.

2. Simple models, easy graphics?
Forget it, that's for weaklings.
Several tens of intersecting spheres, make you lazy CPU work.
And a torus, of course. Real men don't use wear cylinders.

3. When you have not enough spheres, what should you do?
Right. Just add more spheres.

4. Decoupling parts?
That's how it works.
Why not stick the nozzle through the toroidal tank and drop this tank in flight? It's just a one more decoupler and a "Space" press.

5. One could say "not enough struts".
But it's a single part.
Thus the craft on this picture doesn't require 300+ parts, so it makes it KSP-friendly.

6. It's universal.
You can stick it into everything, like in a spacecraft construction game.

F-117

Spoiler

1200px-F-117_Nighthawk_Front.jpg

Based on its shape, designed by beginning KSP modders with Elite background.

low-poligon
rough intersection
no face adjustment
solid color texture (actually, no texture, just a gray rectangle assigned as a texture to every face)
single pilot (just one interior seat, and they got tired to place the props)
a lot of artifacts sticking out, just look at the very nose (clean the model? never heard about it)
fins just extended normally from the fuselage instead of proper attachment
the whole shape, equally appropriate for the KSP and the Oolite mods.

***

B-2

The next of their models, v 0.2 of the mod.

Spoiler

US_Air_Force_B-2_Spirit.jpg

Finally they have learnt the smoothing, but stuck with the rear edge of the wings and failed them, making a saw (cleaning the model after removing a vertex? never heard about it).

The fins have been removed, because they had no idea how to extend them from the curved fuselage without making them look like dog ears.

As the aerodynamics was anyway poor, and they got used to pilot carefully, so they decided to not have any fins at all, because they do everything by pitch & roll.

Two pilot seats ahve been created. The pilot seat was cloned, and the two seats were symmetrically shifted aside, to avoid the epic with the props placing.

***

Now they declare the v 0.3 release, with B-21 added.

Nothing is known for sure, but rumors say that they just set the rescaleFactor to shrink the model, because the previous one was not matching the stock hangar because originally they optimistically designed the B-2 model as a strategic plane with payload three times greater that it can carry in KSP.

Not the tank itself is Kerbal, but the process of its development.

Quote

CreationEdit

In 1947, they began to develop a light amphibious tank, which received the unofficial name PT-20 , and a floating armored personnel carrier based on it
<....>
buoyancycollected by special floats made of aluminum alloy filled with light filler. They were supposed to hang outside. This was a very strange decision, since it was planned that the floats would be transported to the crossing point by off-road trucks behind the tanks. In addition, the installation of the floats itself was accompanied by great difficulties, and in combat conditions , under fire, air raid , or, if necessary, a lightning throw became impossible. Understanding this, the decision was made in the USSR Ministry of Transport Engineering to abandon mounted floats.

This greatly changed the technical characteristics of the tank. Now he had to stay on the water only due to his own buoyancy.  <...>

TestsEdit

The first tests showed that the tank was not only unable to perform combat missions, but could not even swim normally. The weight distribution of the car was calculated incorrectly, because of which the tank dived strongly astern. But if this problem was somehow solved by temporarily installing those same removable floats on the stern, and sheets of steel were welded in front, then the lack of lateral stability and low buoyancy could not be corrected. In addition, the speed on the water was far from the calculated one. If the creators counted on 15 km / h, then it was only 7. At the same time, rivers had to be overcome. There, due to the current, the speed could become very low, or even negative. Attracted shipbuilders . They said that it is necessary to increase the diameter of the propellersup to 600 mm. But such screws simply would not fit in the tunnels of the bottom of the tank. Then they decided to make them collapsible and take them outside. Lower on water and raise on land. But such an arrangement required additional protection for the propellers .

A month later, a second sample was collected. It was improved by equipping it with propellers outside the hull, and also shifted the axis of rotation of the tower by 240 mm towards the bow to reduce the trim . But tests showed that the tank only got worse. The maximum speed afloat did not increase, but remained the same, but the movement of the car on land due to the removal of the propellers turned out to be very difficult. In addition, due to the large distance between the first and second road wheels , the caterpillar was constantly dropped.

As a result, samples of the R-39 tank were found not to meet the specified characteristics, and the project was curtailed. There was a proposal to test samples with further refinement, and conduct another test in a year, but such a proposal was rejected.

Junkers G-28.

Passengers on the same cabin as the navigator, passengers on the wings, passengers everywhere!!! :)

The best pictures I found, however, are from this video below:

And here another one with the history of the thing (and moar pictures!)
