Forum question-how does the sort function work?

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this but...can someone explain to me how the forum sort function works (or doesn't)? All I want to do is sort topics by the most recently created--not most recently replied to. I do a custom search and set it to start date (if that is what that means) and I get results that have no discernible order.

It seems the default on the all the forums are the same topics with zillions of replies and it almost becomes a feedback loop.

The only sort function I see is "relevance" vs. "date". So where are you seeing more options than that?

Doesn't sorting by start date do what you want?

No, it does not work. There is recently updated and start date. Neither will simply give you the most recent topic.
