What is Delta-V

Recommended Posts

I’m kind of a noob at doing at doing proper things in KSP like intercepting another craft, landing on Mun, etc though I have been playing for 3 years and I have seen numerous mentions of delta V everywhere. What is it?

“Just google it”

I prefer talking to real people and having a discussion

Thanks for your time and help!

dV = range per tank of gas/petrol

isp = mpg

thrust = hp

(Obviously not really but good enough to get a workable understanding)

Eh, I think that's too misleading. Your range is unlimited, barring friction or other outside forces. You need 1170 dV for transmunar injection and capture (that is, to get from low Kerbin orbit to low Mun orbit), but that is only indirectly related to how far away the Mun is. What's important are the orbital velocities in LKO, LMO, the Hohmann transfer orbit, and the Mun's orbit around Kerbin.

Basically, your velocity stays the same in space if nothing happens to change it (you stay in LKO and don't get hit by another ship or whatever). If you want to go somewhere else, you need to change your velocity to match that place.
