Asymmetrical Aircraft Challenge

Recommended Posts

GOAL: Build an asymmetrical aircraft that can take off and land horizontally.   Use at least 10 parts and do not use any parts more than once.

RULES:

1. You may not use any part more than once.  This means no symmetry--no matched pairs of wings or any other item that has a right and left version. A right and a left lifting surface count as the same part (clarification: wings, rudders, elevators, ailerons etc).  That goes for landing gear as well.

2. No reaction wheels or fly-by-wire.  Internal SAS only, and bonus kudos if you can fly it with SAS off.

3. The plane must takeoff and land horizontally. No VTOL.

4. Anything else goes. All mods that do not alter physics are fine.

5. Keep in mind the spirit of the challenge. I cannot foresee every loophole.  Be clever and innovative, but remember, this is about creating something unique using your building skill to achieve it.

6. Post photos, or if you can, video.

7. Impress your friends with this collector's item badge.

The plane below does not technically follow the rules, since it uses some of the same parts more than once, but you get the idea of what is possible...

It's on KerbalX if you are interested.

Also, check out @ZobrAz's FrankenPlane, which inspired me in my ventures into asymmetry in the first place.

The video below that is some old footage of the Blohm & Voss BV 141, a German asymmetrical plane from WWII.

I have a ton of homework, so I just kinda threw something together in 5 minutes. I didn't make anything nearly as cool as the things you guys did, but I just recently realized that the "Goliath" has a node or attachment point at the front, so I really wanted to try that out. I cheated and used tweakscale and the skids from (I believe) Airplane Plus so I could save time.

I'm tempted to try to design a fully assymetrical stock propeller plane, but that will require custom bearing designs, and of course there are a limited number of SAS wheels.

Nice!  I've exploited that node on several of my weird designs, most notably this one.

This challenge is actually hard, but I'll see what I can do. What's the reward for completing it successfully?

I will come up with an appropriate badge keeping with the aesthetics of the entries.

Fair enough. Does this qualify?

Heck yeah!!!

Technically this something I built back in KSP 1.2.2 (for a BDA contest, believe it or not), but it needed some tweaking to be fully no-duplicate-parts compliant. Flies smooth w/ cockpit SAS, can be flown with no SAS, even no input, assuming minor trim usage.

I love it!  What on earth was the BDA contest that lead to that????

I present the newest addition to the Starling Industries experimental fleet, the SI-X-Asymmetric-3 'Humpback'

https://imgur.com/J19R1uh

It's a little bit...special, but it flies well (as long as you don't yaw left too fast. If you do that the Humpback has a tendency to spin uncontrollably, in a way that the boys back in R&D assure me makes it become a cool spinning blade of doom, but also kills its occupants). Takeoff involves a bit of a weird rolling pitch up then down then up maneuver, but after that, the Humpback flies in a reasonably stable trajectory.

Some glamor shots for the sake of it:

I was inspired to make a Kilrathi fighter from Wing Commander. I came up with a random cat-name and built this:

It's fairly stable and can do Mach 4.72. It's even got a single dumb-fire missile. Fun!

It also has to be flown with SAS off, as the vertical surfaces ended up reversed, so up is down. Also fun!

Well, I finally got my own entry completed. I've decided to call it Qfwfq, after a character in Italo Calvino's Cosmicomics, which I am reading right now. It is absurdist sci-fi, which seems apropos for this thing.

It still needs work. It is a handful to fly, and it has a habit of veering off the runway on takeoff; I had a couple of takeoffs that occurred at a 90 degree angle from the direction of the runway.  I don''t think the passengers cared for that too much.  Nevertheless, it can take off and actually land, so I am pretty happy about that.

It actually flies pretty well, although it rolls way too much. Can fly without SAS but needs to constant fiddling to keep it straight. Flies perfectly fine with SAS on.

First off, nice bird! Err.....cat! Lol.

Secondly, an easy way to fix that is to right click the vertical control surfaces and change their max deployment to -100%.

Really!? I didn't know that. That's very helpful, as it seems to come up sometimes when the control surfaces are in weird places. Thanks!
