A stock aircraft called F-104 CKJ.  Built with 41 of the finest parts, its root part is Mark2Cockpit.

Rotation at 80 m/s with +3 trim recommended (momentarily release SAS to allow the up-trim to perform the rotation). Land with SAS off and the same trim.

My blend of the work of others and a tribute to the designer’s iconic original.

Also, I have to say, the most fun I’ve had flying any airplane in KSP!

It’s not quite as fast as the KP-9 because of its bigger dimensions and greater fuel capacity, but I prefer its proportions.

Beep Craftyard

DSRN RA-100  

Description

A stock comsat constellation called Beep.  Built with 78 of the finest parts, its root part is dockingPortLarge. cPxCb7F.png

Beep carries 2 pods of 3 comsats each. Approaching a virgin planet/moon, Beep deploys the 2 pods to independently maneuver to enter equatorial and polar orbits. Each pod is equipped with a Spark engine and 400 kallons of fuel. 

Each pod, once established in its target orbit, then deploys its 3 comsats at 120 degree intervals. 

Each comsat is equipped with a Dawn ion engine and 150 units of xenon for orbital adjustments. In addition, 4 OX4L solar panels, a Z200 battery, a HECS controller, a PB-NUK RTG and an RA-2 network relay.

Archer Craftyard

A stock lifter called Archer. Built with 60 of the finest parts, its root part is probeStackLarge.

Archer is a reusable lifter.  It is modeled on and inspired by "Javelin", (Brikoleur’s fabulous Wangari Maathai).

Archer may be 1) orbited back to KSC or 2) flown to apoapsis to jettison a payload and then directed to land downrange on the next promontory (40W) east of KSC.  In the latter case, after jettison, the payload must secure its own circularization pronto.  Control may then be switched back to Archer so that it may be flown to a landing, either on wheels or under chutes.

By careful balancing of fuel, fore and aft, Archer may be de-orbited steeply, orthogonally opposing prograde with its full wing span.  (Use the trim indicator with SAS off to exactly balance the fuel: aim to get it center-pegged.)  Therefore, you can e.g. start the de-orbit 110 degrees before the surface target (at 180E when destined for KSC.)  When finally resuming prograde, move fuel forward and keep it there until slowed under 1,000 m/s.  Then move all remaining fuel into the center tank for gentle maneuvering.  Finally, for landing, adjust trim by moving some fuel into the aft tank, as Archer is otherwise nose-heavy at slow speed.

Archer lofts payloads up to 100 tons.  Includes a fairing in the nose to join with and potentially cover the payload.

Note: in the shot shown below, Archer managed the load by siphoning fuel from the payload and then cutting away at apoapsis to allow the payload vehicle to self-circularize.  Archer was then flown back to land under chutes.

Minotaur is dead! Long live Minotaur!!  (Thank you, Minotaur, for 3 years of faithful service.)

Titan is my new fuel tanker.  It’s loaded to deliver the max LF (maybe 70K+ kallons) to low (90km) orbit, but if you want equivalent OX, you can fill the tanks and it will still scrape off the pad (and even make it to the Mun to serve as a tanker there).

A stock rocket called Escort.  Built with 48 of the finest parts, its root part is probeStackLarge. 

Escort is a max-grunt interplanetary transfer insertion booster. It’s a "cyclic transfer booster".   It’s a ROCKET SLED! 

Put it behind your expedition train and Escort will boost it to the desired escape trajectory in 0-to-60 seconds.  Separate; turn retrograde; burn back for recovery; rinse; refuel; repeat… 

Escort can manage lo-grav landings, e.g. on the Mun for refueling.  (I use one Escort to bring fuel up to fill a Titan or replenish a munar space station as it has far greater capacity than my SuperHawk lander.)

I'd like to take a moment here to comment (on behalf of Truman) that we welcome comments, questions, discussion in this forum topic! 

We would also like to thank anyone/everyone who has downloaded craft from KerbalX.com/Hotel26. 

If you're like me, you much prefer to fly and use craft of your own design!  That is what KSP is all about, after all. 

I can say, though, that I have learned so very much by downloading (or reverse-engineering!) the work of others, which is very often brilliantly
inspired/executed.   I strive always to give credit in my KerbalX posts to the source(s) of inspiration with links and invite comparison;
arguably, my objectives/style are sometimes somewhat different and the peruser may prefer the original or concoct an own blend. 

It's in this spirit that I enjoy uploading the results of my fiddling and tweaking, in the hope of more widely sharing my own small selection of ideas
gleaned from a collaborative community.  Similarly, I revel in kaizen (incremental improvement) and would welcome any/all ideas/critique for
enhancement of any craft published herein or even suggestions/ideas on KSP engineering in general. 

I truly understand that most down-loaders will use these craft as a springboard/stimulus for further development of their own ideas and
development and I whole-heartedly encourage this! 

(My gratitude to Forum Moderator @sumghai for invaluable assistance with the formulation of this topic!)

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

While I am here, an explanatory note about Truman's AG key assignments.  It's a simplistic attempt but he assigns: 

  • 9 & 0 to lifters
  • 1-4 to airplanes and payload vehicles
  • 8-5 to rovers et al

If craft in the second category above require more keys, he'll flexibly extend the boundary upward as often there will be no collision with the small
range of craft it might potentially carry as payload...  (e.g. transport plane carrying a rover)  I am aware that there are sophisticated mods
available for managing key assignments, as well... 

The craft description gives a mnemonic summary of assignments to be skimmed by the pilot before operation.

I do expect that down-loaders will make their own re-assignments to their own taste!

Finally, I fly new vehicles for several weeks, making incremental improvements, before I publish vehicles (one every Friday evening from a backlog).
I make every attempt to strenuously avoid KerbalX updates, once a craft has been published, because I know such updates are a pain to those
who have already down-loaded and modified/integrated craft into their own fleet.  Similarly, I build/test in 1.3.1 and in pure stock to make these
craft most widely accessible.  I will, however, be upgrading to KSP 1.4.5 sometime in the first half of 2019.  :)

DSRN RA-100 Craftyard

A stock Deep Space comsat called DSRN RA-100.  Built with 15 of the finest parts, its root part is fairingSize2.

DSRN RA-100 is my standard launch payload for a single comsat contribution to a Deep Space Relay Network, as outlined in the article cited above.  I use a heavy lifter to send DSRN RA-100 atop an Omega ion drive. (This is almost certainly scandalous overkill!) and I will be publishing that lifter, Methuselah, on some upcoming Friday.  Any standard lifter of your own could be used, though, relying on the DSRN RA-100 pod to circularize itself. 

The DSRN comsat pod is powered by a Terrier supplied with 800 kallons of fuel.  The comsat itself contains an RA-100 relay, of course, plus Dawn ion drive with 150 units of xenon, an Okto controller, 2x Gigantor solar sails, a PB-NUK RTG and a Z200 battery.

F-104 CKJ Bumblebee Redux

A stock aircraft called Blackbird.  Built with 35 of the finest parts, its root part is mk2Cockpit.Standard. 

Everyone does Blackbird.  I am no different; I am only kerbal.  So I, too, am doing Blackbird. 

This is Triop’s illustrious SR-2000 bird!  Arguably, his flies better: please do give his version a trial flight.  I tweaked the dimensions only to make the machine more closely resemble the real aircraft. 

My Blackbird does 1340m/s @ 24km for a fuel draw of 0.67.  Or you can go dock in orbit…

Bumblebee Redux Craftyard

To mark my Sixtieth Publication here @KerbalX.com, I present this rendition of Brikoleur’s magnificent Bumblebee VTOL trainer herein unlocked for short-range conventional flight and published with his most generous and gracious permission.

The original Bumblebee perfectly fulfilled its stated mission as a VTOL trainer but its brilliant design nevertheless contained the DNA for a full-utility mission profile. As a mere workman, unworthy of the task, interpreting that DNA I have made the following simple modifications:

  •     re-oriented the VERT thrust stacks for minimal drag in HORZ flight
  •     added 2 more Junos to now provide the HORZ thrust
  •     embedded an Okto2 facing vertically to provide a VERT control reference [AG4] used in conjunction with SAS Surface mode Radial Out.[1]
  •     removed the for'ard Vernor to add a small radial intake for extra air for the brief periods in which both sets of Junos are operating
  •     added a basic fin for yaw stability during cruise mode

This wee beastie operates at 200-220 m/s at 5,000m drawing 0.08 kal/sec yielding a range of 715km. Hover ceiling is 4800m.

The Vernor translation controls H,I,J,K and L are available in the hover but N is not. Importantly, K will slow your descent when HORZ Ctl [Ag3] is selected but use H when/if hovering with VERT Ctl [AG4].  (I use the VERT Ctl primarily to return to a stable, neutral attitude.)  Ensure you have RCS selected to use the Vernor thrusters…

[1] DO NOT FORGET to tap ‘F’ SAS Hold before selecting [AG3] to transit from VERT Ctl to HORZ Ctl mode.

Atmospheric Autopilot in level flight is highly recommended.  Be very ginger about attitude adjustments whilst landing on SAS only!

My sincere gratitude to the Master for the lessons his ingenuity have taught a simple workman. (I am not worthy! :) ) Please do check out the full range of his imaginative creations.

This is the third and final revision of Mink, the XTD, which has been reformulated as a tail-dragger yielding far more reliable landing outcomes.  Vr is ~42 m/s, so landing at this speed results in a "three-pointer" with no further desire by Mink to fly.

Mach 1.02 at 8.5 km drawing 0.12 kal/sec for a range of 1,100km.  [approx]

To lift off water: flaps down, SAS Hold, throttle up, reaching 40 m/s, release SAS, Weigh Anchor!!

Mink Peregrine

A stock commuter jet called meTro.   Built with 21 of the finest parts, its root part is Mark1Cockpit.

This is my replacement for the trusty Beech Twin Executive which served me so well.

My Kerbal engineers have dubbed it, The Pencil (and I suspect also they have dubbed me, "Pencilhead"), but it does 520 m/s @7.4km (step up after half fuel) for a very economical draw of just 0.08 k/sec.  Range is a surprising 900+ km! (Designed to be used with a Krew Bus for loading/unloading.)  Just what the commuter airline ordered!

Trim +4 and let it fly away…  (Earlier if you mind the tail!)

Mosquito Craftyard

A stock asteroid miner called Mosquito.  Built with 90 of the finest parts, its root part is dockingPortLarge.

Mosquito has proven itself a hugely successful first project. It’s a flexible, capable asteroid miner. It comes here packaged with a Zephyr launcher but could be mounted on any nimble, medium-heavy lifter of your own preference.

(Acknowledgement of inspiration from Atkara for my reverse-engineered Zephyr lifter. Please do check out his original and, indeed, his whole range of exquisitely-engineered craft.)

After its first use, Mosquito can be refueled in orbit and then redispatched on its next mission utilizing my Escort to punch it into any inclination for a new intercept.

UPDATED: now includes an escape hatch for missions that have been sent into high and completely bogus inclinations...  Burn retro into the atmosphere and then Punch Out.  Use your personal chute when Low & Slow...

Goblin Craftyard

Mosquito Hobgoblin

A stock miner called Goblin.  Built with 68 of the finest parts, its root part is fuelTank1-2.

I launch Goblin atop my Archer launcher but it comes here, separately, ready to mount on your own, preferred lifter.

Inspired by Atkara’s Surface Miner Mk1, its chief differences are:

  1. a 650 kN Skipper instead of 4x 60 kN Terriers
  2. 4 Hitchhiker cabins (16 crew) forming a stable landing base and allowing easy ground access
  3. 4 drills rather than 2
  4. it has chutes and can be landed on Kerbin

Goblin is more than a surface miner – it’s a mobile base!

I've started testing a Dart now and I'll be using Duna as the benchmark (0.3g) and as it has atmosphere.  [Terriers would never have performed well here.]

So there may be an upgrade in the offing.  If the Dart does not have the grunt to lift a full load from Moho/Duna, I'll be trying the Reliant...

UPDATE:

  • a Skipper seems to be the best solution.  (Duna is not so important since Ike is a better source for fuel-to-orbit.  So, Moho is the most suitable benchmark.)
  • Goblin has now been upgraded to use the Skipper

Ursa is a supersonic, cargo plane.  It can carry 2x Intruder/Invader rovers or 1x Chrysalis refueling mission vehicle.  Cruises comfortably around 21km depending upon load.  May need a speed run around 10-12km when heavily loaded.

A stock rover called Invader.  Built with 33 of the finest parts, its root part is structuralIBeam2.

My main rover.  It’s fast (46 m/s) and stable; difficult to damage/roll over.

Seating for 8 and powered by 6 fuel cells fed from an Oscar and dockable at each end to fit two Invaders into an Ursa cargo transporter.

It also comes packaged for airborne deployment with Triop R1 and Valkyrie Invader.

It has space for Bon Voyage navigation but be advised that BV does not appear to recognize fuel cell electrical generation.  If you want Bon Voyage, I recommend choosing Intruder instead.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.3.1.
