Geek cred

Recommended Posts

If there were any lingering doubts about whether I am a nerd (if so, what kind of posts from me were you reading?!), this should dispel them.

My family spent part of the Thanksgiving weekend in Dallas, and went to Ripleys! there one morning, and they had a station where you could make wax hands. So I made this.

One of the staff there got excited about it, and asked if I were a math teacher. I'm not, but I am an engineer. So close enough for these purposes.

Anything you guys have done lately to prove your geekiness?

Gee, I don't know...

Derived the rocket equation for fun?

Derived the Pythagorean Theorem for fun?

Calculated Jupiter's mass for fun?

Calculated the Sun's mass for fun?

Read scientific and engineering papers for fun?

Not sure what those would count for though.

Created in C++ a CBit class to implement a bit (i.e. 1/0).

It had tens of methods, conditions, and other stuff, several kilobytes source file.

Calculated what it would take to lift the big island of Hawaii, one kilometer deep, on an ideal SSTO hydrolox rocket. If I recall correctly, the energy required to electrolyse that much water came out to something like 300 tons.

I browsed a forum for a space simulation game that I rarely even play any more, because its one of the few places in the whole world with large numbers of like-minded-ish people to shoot the breeze with :)

Also, to further document my geekinerdiness, my first thought when I saw the hand was:
